Gypsy's Kidneys

Hi Dawn. We lost our little girl Zoe at 7 yrs. old to kidney failure. I have one thought about Gypsy not wanting her Rx food, are you giving her just the dry food? Zoe got to that point and didn't want the dry food either so I talked to the vet and there is Rx canned food as well. I started getting that and mixing it in with her dry and she started eating again. Just a thought. Email me if you would like, I have been through this too. I will keep you both in my thoughts.

Hey Dawn!

I just wanted to let you know that you and Gypsy are in my thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear about all the trouble you continue to have. You are such a good furmommy. My heart goes out to you.

Danielle

Dawn, I'm so sorry to hear that Gypsy is unwell. We went through all of what you are experiencing now with our Bailey last year, and this brings back all of those painful memories. My heart goes out to you.

As one poster advised, if Gypsy is not on canned food, please try it. Bailey would no longer eat dry kibble, but would eat the canned. After a while, I mixed the two together, and she would it eat. Drinking was also difficult, and we were on sub-q fluids for several weeks. I feel for you, and I'm sorry you and Gypsy are having to go through this. It is even worse since it's so close to Chandler's passing. Hugs to you!

Yes I do have the canned and she used to eat it but, I noticed yesterday it says new improved formula. So it may be the change they made that has her refusing to eat it. I wish they would just leave some things alone. If you do have any suggestions for me I would welcome them.

Have you tried mixing in anything else that might get her interested like veggies or a small amount of chicken broth? I know sometimes the smellier it is the more they want to eat it.

I just got off the phone with the Dermatologist to let him know she is not eating and has required fluids. He said to stop the antibiotic for the weekend and see how she does. There are currently no signs of the rash but I do know it can resurface quickly. We will continue topical antibiotic spray and the baths.

Macguiregirl, today I will try your suggestion of a little low sodium chicken broth added to the wet food and will heat it a little. I know the smell is stronger when the food is warm. Thanks for the suggestion.

I just gave her the nausea pill and am hoping since she won't be taking the antibiotic today she will eat later. she also did not empty her bladder yet today so it has now been 12 hrs. since she went. I will be calling my vet and speaking with him also.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

I came across this and thought of you. I thought you might be interesting in reading it...

http://www.dogaware.com/health/kidneynattie.html This dog weighs 44 lbs so you'd want to feed the amount based on their weight as her detailed diet would be too much food. When my dogs I got sick, i was up for trying anything and everything, so hope this is of some value to you.

Still sending good vibes to you both!

Dawn, I'm so sorry to hear Gypsy isn't doing well. My prayers go out to both of you that she returns to a more normal state of kidney function and for strength through this incredibly difficult time.
