Harness woes!

Tully hated wearing a harness her whole life. It was odd because she had to wear a harness for flyball, and I made them wear a harness bushwalking so they could have a longer lead, so I would have thought she'd have only positive experiences. But nope, always hated wearing one (and I have 5 different ones).

I know this is an old thread but I have come to really like harnesses vs collars-- first of all no more choke, 2. soooo much more secure and I love the handle that I can use to pick the dog up if I have to. 3. they have reflective stitching and it does show up in car lights-- but it does kind of make them look wonky-- not a real problem tho. That said I have one sheltie who sees the harness come off the wall and is REARDY TO GO NOW!! The other is out the doggy door and won't come in for treats nor love. The harness is not the problem it is the walk-- but once on the walk she is bouncing down the road with that wonderful sheltie gait, head up and in the moment. When we get the harnesses on she is raring to go out the door and get started-- who knows maybe she is thinking OK lets get this over with?? I also think harnesses are great for buckling dogs into the car.

I prefer harness over lead for Teddy to protect his neck on longer walks. For quick potty outings he will sit nice and still for his leash. But will run behind my recliner if he sees his harness. Once it's on he ignores that he is wearing it Go figure, Guess they all have an opinion on wearing their harnesses

Yeah I don't know what it is--our harnesophobic pup once the harness is on she is raring to go and will wear it around proudly after the walk but it is like punishing her to get her to come and sit and let us put it on.

Have mercy!! Cooper has a new harness (Rabbitgoo brand). It fits him great, but you would think we had stuck a ball and chain on him!! No pep in his step!! We switched from putting the leash on his collar for the times he gets so wound up hearing motorcycles and big trucks and he pulls so hard we felt he would hurt himself. We are going on a hike later this morning and I thought although he doesn’t need it at the lake it’s one of his favorite places so he might tie the two together and realize we aren’t trying to torture him! lol. Any other suggestions? He has only had it 2 days. Thanks!

I know this is an old thread but we have one dog that begs to go for walks and one who just wants to stay home especially if she has to wear the Phoepet harness (basically the same one you describe). They hear the sound of me taking them out and the world changes. I think they are great harnesses, well made and I think comfortable. Not sure what her problem is but now she doesn't run, she won't come but you can walk up to her and put it on- once on she bounces along with that Sheltie bounce and I think has a great time-- I think shelties believe-rightly- that they can train us to do just what they want-- they are sheep dogs and we are to be herded.. Patience will ouit.
