Hate Purina, need to switch

Considering how long this sheltie will be with you I think it is worth waiting until you get what you want. Can't wait to see what you end up with.

Don't tell hubby, but when Hanna gets to be 3 or 4, I'll be looking for a bi-blue as well ( I don't have a preference when it comes to male or female).

I have been feeding Riley Earthborn Holistic Grain Free and my parents feed their Springer Fromm - both dogs do well on their respective kibble.

Here is another good website to order from http://www.chewy.com/ - I have not ordered food but I have used it for ordering treats and toys.

Ha! I've just Earthborn into my store....it's pretty new....would love to here from you about it....Can you PM me!

I'd say that a lot of breeders feed ProPlan- it's more affordable for the amount of dogs that they are feeding than to try and feed them all something like Orijen, Acana, or some of the other brands that people on here use.
If you don't have 5+ dogs to feed then you can afford to spend a little more.

Also breeders are often subsidized on these commercial foods. You should not assume that they are the best.

That being said, Proplan is one of the better of the commercial brands out there.

But its actually not a whole lot cheaper than the premium or holistic brands.

You can do a whole lot better, definitely. And I personally think its better than Royal Canine and Science Diet. But it really comes down to how much you want to pay, is grain-free an issue for you, are their food sensitivies, stomach upsets....why do you WANT to change, fundamentally? That is, what is NOT working for you?

This is a daily conversation at my store. with our pet parents. With probably about 20+ brands that I carry, its a real challenge sometimes pointing people in the right direction.

So, I'm going to ask YOU what it is you think you are looking for/need for your pup before I chime in.

:confused2:not sure what you mean by subsidized...

Breeders will feed what works, bottom line. Doesnt matter the brand or type, if it doesnt work we find something that works. That is partially what goes into our decision making. We pick apart what brands have what for a calcium amount for our bitches, Protein and fat content and supplements.

The reason I want to switch is because I wasn't comfortable feeding my dogs a grain based diet. At first when I started reaserching, I thought I'd never want to have anything to do with any Purina food agian. Now I realize after talking to so many people (breeders, vets, everyday dog owners, etc), it's not such a bad food. Yes, I still want to try Wellness and have just started switching them to it, but if I had to I know that I would be willing to put them back on ProPlan and wouldn't have any problem doing so.

I've been feeding them the Wellness mixture for about a week and they are now on the 50/50 blend. Since Dixie came home I have been slacking a little on grooming the others. With Jody, I could groom him in the morning and by night time he'd look like he hadn't seen a brush in a month. He hasn't been brushed in two days now, and he looks like I just brushed him a few hours ago (other than were he was chewing his chest hair).:biggrin2: I know it will only get better and his fur will get healthier.(happy dance!)

I'm a huge fan of Deli fresh and pet fresh foods. Back when we were switching houses all over the place and had several varieties of dog food get recalled on us, Honey stopped eating, even when I put special toppings like yogurt on her food. I bought the fresh pet in desperation because she was getting to thin, and she started eating again right away. It had her feeling so good I was able to quickly start her on half kibble and half fresh, and after a while switch back to mainly kibble with the fresh pet as the occasional treat. It stores well in the fridge, it doesn't take much for each meal.

I've gotten the vital as well, but I felt that the freshpet kept a little better, perhaps because vital seemed to be wetter.

We also feed twice a day, 1/4 cup and Honey stays around 20 lbs...or if it's the summer when she doesn't want to move, and frequently manages to sneak into the doors our neighbor leaves open to eat the cat food...a little heavier.
Hi I just switched my Sheltie, Shiloh on freshpet. He is 14 years old and quit eating. Have you had any issues with it at all? Please help. Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear Shiloh's not eating...I've never had any issues with it, my dogs love it, although now it's an occasional treat. Have you brought Shiloh to the vet to see if there's anything else going on? With his age there are so many health reasons why he might have gone off his food. You can try mashing it up really well and mixing it with water. I don't know what state his teeth are in, but my sisters older pom stopped eating and it was because chewing was to difficult. That was a year or more ago, once she switched to something he didn't have to do any work on he got right back up to weight and eats fine.

Have you considered trying Shiloh on raw? I have a very picky 2 year old and he loves it. If you need a recipe for a raw food I have one I'd be willing to share or you could just whip up a small batch and see if he likes it, you could also try mixing a bit of raw with their regular food.

I have never tried him on raw. He does have a sensitive stomach and a lot of stuff I feed him gives him really bad diarrhea. Sure I would definitely be willing to give it a try. Thank you.
