Hate Purina, need to switch

Just went through this when I was fed up with the recalls on Innova which I had fed for years. I switched to Wellness, Super Mix 5 with Lamb Barley and Fish (although my hubby says there's something just WRONG about feeding a sheepherding dog lamb,) I chose lamb because I figured maybe less chance of salmonella than with chicken.

The girls all love it, no diarrhea issues, nice shiny coats. I also do feed a fish oil capsule with dinner. I've always fed twice daily myself.

I think Blue Buffalo has had some recalls, so I decided against that brand.

Good luck!
:eek2: I actually use blue buffalo for everything (treats, food, chewwies) and have never seen a recall on it. When googling I saw they had some issues in 2010 and back, but nothing as of recent. here's a recent list though just to add it to this thread: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recalls/

We feed Fromms for the kibble and By Nature Organics canned and supplement with our meals that the dog and cat can eat. I feed both pets kibble in the Am and canned/people meals in the PM. Works for our house. We feed a more expensive (upfront) food and have found that you can feed less high quality food so food seems to last a little longer. Sally and Pumpkin get whatever meat we are having-small tastes and veggies and fruits that they enjoy and are ok for them. I like to give my animals food that is varied and healthy. Seems to agree with them. I think feeding 2 times a day is better but some folks like just 1 time a day. I just think it gives them more to look forward to

Thanks Ann! I can't find where it says shipping price on PetFoodDerect. Is it free?

I was looking at Petsmart's dog food and saw this. Would you recommend any of them?

I'm not familiar with any of these, but then I feed kibble and these are fresh foods. They look like they're good quality, but you have to read the ingredients and check for things like by-products of any kind (should be NONE ever!), corn and soy.

Pet360 ships free over $49 and I think PetFoodDirect does too but it should say on the website.

It is absolutely true that you will feed way less of a high quality food than you do of something like Purina. My dogs all weigh around 20 lbs and get 1/4 c twice a day. They sometimes get porky on that. I suspect you'd feed at least a cup a day of Purina. That's because foods like Purina are stuffed with fillers and byproducts and doggie junk food. So in the long run, you will save money with a better food and your dogs will benefit.

I do feed twice a day BTW. Puppies under 6 months and pregnant/nursing bitches, 3 or 4x a day.

Thanks again! Your right, I feed 1 cup a day and Jody could even use a little more. I'm also going to start feeding them twice a day. I'll look at the DogFoodAdvisery and see what they say about the fresh rolled foods at Petsmart. As far as kibble, I think I'm leaning toward TOTW, Wellness Super5Mix, or Fromm and maybe Blue Buffalo Wilderness. Still thinking though...

Edit: I just checked the rolled food. Deli Fresh was very good (5 stars), Authority and Vital weren't on the list (but I would think that the Vital would be good, considering the other Freshpet food had such a high rating), and Pet Botanics had a very low rating (2.5 stars).

Our four are all on Acana. I trust this Canadian product -- made fresh, nothing from China, no etho -- it's just fantastic!! We get it from a direct ship place.

I wish my dog was as easy to feed as you all seem to do well with yours. I tried fromme and blue buffalo , canyon river ranch two flavors, and some others I got samples at pet shop that sells organic. My dog likes me cooking him chicken and rice, liver and boiled potato, ground beef with rice and peas, he spits the peas out, so if I have it he likes mashed sweet potatoe. I am afraid if something happened to me or say I was in the hospital or somthing richard wont know how to feed him. I wish I could scoop it out and put it in a bowl. He is so stubborn, one bowl sat for 2 weeks waiting to see if he would nibble, not a bite taken.

You might want to package a few meals for the freezer.

I'm a huge fan of Deli fresh and pet fresh foods. Back when we were switching houses all over the place and had several varieties of dog food get recalled on us, Honey stopped eating, even when I put special toppings like yogurt on her food. I bought the fresh pet in desperation because she was getting to thin, and she started eating again right away. It had her feeling so good I was able to quickly start her on half kibble and half fresh, and after a while switch back to mainly kibble with the fresh pet as the occasional treat. It stores well in the fridge, it doesn't take much for each meal.

I've gotten the vital as well, but I felt that the freshpet kept a little better, perhaps because vital seemed to be wetter.

We also feed twice a day, 1/4 cup and Honey stays around 20 lbs...or if it's the summer when she doesn't want to move, and frequently manages to sneak into the doors our neighbor leaves open to eat the cat food...a little heavier.
