hahaah, I am glad I am at a place where this statment is not responded to with a raised eyebrow but big smiles, since I am in good company here!!!
Whatever made me this long to get a Sheltie??
Speaking of this, what made some of you get one?
I was looking for a working dog that can live comfortably in the city, and wouldn't be 'crazy/intenese' as a Border Collie, but still a working breed yet fun and small, and just as or even more intelligent, lol. As a young kid a neighbour had a Sheltie and it stuck in my mind how beautiful they are
I used to have German Shepherd, a Boxer and a Terrier mix in my life before, which were wonderful dogs, but a Sheltie takes the cake as a breed for me, is that a bad thing to say? lol I used to think German Shepherds were THE breed for me but I stand corrected. I love the Sheltie's willingness to learn and please, yet they still have such an independant, lively spirit!

Oh, good question!!
My puppy Duncan is my second dog ever. We got Pierre last year and I had to be really picky about the breed - One, we lived in an apartment at the time and Two, my husband was afraid of large dogs (he saw his dad get attacked but has since reconciled the fear). A Papillon was a smart, low-maintenance sort of dog that worked well for us as a couple.
It didn't take too long for us to really ache for a second. My husband even asked for a bigger dog (but not too big as we don't have a fenced yard). I have always loved Papillons and Shelties (and Danes, but the sheer size makes them out of the question) from growing up and meeting them (and never being allowed to have one). So, I thought - Sheltie!! I am so pleased with this dog that I will be surprised if I ever get another breed. My husband might want to for himself, but if it is "my" dog, then it will be a Sheltie! He is so quick and very quirky. Every day he bonds with us more and melts my heart.

I had always wanted a Collie. When I was a young child my family had Cocker Spaniels and we had them throughout my childhood. They were very nice dogs-but not a Collie. I still had my heart set on that Collie, but they were so big.
When I was in my early 20's I found out about Sheltie's,until then I didn't even know they existed. There was my dog- something that looked very much like a Collie but in a much smaller package. I got my first sheltie and I was hooked. I've had them since(30+yrs)almost always more than one at a time.

I grew up with Border Collies and that was what I got when I first moved out on my own. I was lucky and the Border Collie lived to 15 years, so I knew in advance that I needed a smaller dog for my bed especially. The Border Collie used to lay cross wise on the bed, I woke up hanging on to the edge of the mattress. I went to a dog show and saw a black and white sheltie--it looked just like a miniature border collie to me. Then I got one and WOW. One of the best things that ever happened to me. I got up to three shelties when I was living alone, but my husband wasn't much on inside dogs, so we compromized on 1 sheltie. My husband absolutely loves our sheltie, Buddy, though, and said I could bring up a second sheltie after we have had Buddy for a year. Buddy is 8 months old and looks a lot like Toffee. I can't show many pictures though, because I don't know how to put the pictures on line.
Sorry, I got to talking too much about my sheltie--Welcome to the both of you. I've had them about 20 years and haven't been happy with any other kind of dog since.

My DH and I were both in the Air Force. Military life can be very non-conducive for dogs, especially if you have no relatives to care for them when you deploy. We'd always loved Shelties, and once I knew we'd be staying in one place, I started loading up!
