Welcome, I won't add any more advice except socialize the pup early. While some shelties can be shy, I've found that early socialization gets them past this tendency. I don't know about dog parks in your area, but I've found they can be a great place for both socialization and burning up puppy energy.
Also, a great place to meet other dog lovers. That's how I ended up here. After meeting Sharon, Shadow and Sting at our local dog park. If you have your puppy by June 26 you should consider coming to the get together at Harkness Park here in Connecticut.
I started this as used to be a New Yorker. Where in NY are you? I grew up in Astoria Queens, end of the BMT line. But I've been here for over 40 years now. As my wife likes to say though, you can take the kid out of the city but you can't take the city out of the kid. Good luck with the smartest breed on the planet.

Good luck with the new puppy!! I'd love a puppy but if I get one more sheltie I think my neighbors might start calling me the dog lady. :lol:

I agree with Justicemom - Dr Dunbar's books are very helpful!! The more you know ahead of time the better off you'll be.
 
Thanks everyone for the great advice. I actually have been reading as much as I can about raising puppies and shelties in particular. We are really excited since we get to bring home our baby next Sunday, May 30. We picked her out from the breeder last weekend. She is a beautiful, blue merle puppy whom we are going to name Maggie! As soon as I figure out how to post pictures, I surely will!
