Hello from New York

Welcome. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your new puppy.

Re: housebreaking - take out after the puppy eats. I took Emma out every hour or so or if she acted like she wanted to go out. When I was at work, my dad did the same. She was trained in a week.

I never used a crate for any of my puppies. They slept on the bed until they were old enough to sleep on the floor.

Have lots of toys, lots of treats. They want to spend time with you. Don't be afraid to cuddle with them.

Take LOTS of pictures. I didn't with my Noah and regret it. I just couldn't get him to pose for a picture. It just wasn't his thing. With Emma, since she was borh on Sep 21, since I have had her, I take pictures every 21st of the month, just to document her growth.

Find a good vet that you can trust. Don't be afraid to change vets if you don't or the puppy doesn't feel comfortable.

Above all else - enjoy. Pick the name that suits your puppy's personality. You'll know when you meet him or her.

Welcome~

Hello everyone! I've been reading the message board for several months but haven't yet posted anything, so here I go. I do not have a sheltie right now but have put down a deposit on a pup from a reputable breeder in Connecticut. I'm scheduled to bring the little guy or gal home first week of June. Wish me and my fiancé luck. I have never had a dog so this will be loads of fun, or so I hope. If anyone has any general advice about bringing the puppy home or about potty training issues, please let me know! :smile2:

Hello, hello, and congrats to you and your fiance' on both your upcoming marriage as well as your new little furchild. You have certainly picked what I'm sure we will all agree on as a GREAT choice ;-). My experience is shelties are one...(if not the.....)of the smartest breeds. Quick to learn...and surely aim to please.

You're in the absolute right place for advice ;-)..

Hello there!:smile2:

All I can say with a first dog is
'Expect the Unexpected'
They like to surprise you.

Congrats on your prospective pups.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I'm sure our little furchild will bring endless joys, as well as some surprises. I'll be sure to post pics when we get him/ her home. I'm actually supposed to go see the breeder this weekend to pick one out!

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your decision to adopt a sheltie! Can't wait to see the pictures. What's the time frame for the arrival of your pup?

Welcome and congratulations on your new puppy.

I agree with the importance of crating your pup. I crate mine every night, not just for housebreaking, but also to keep her out of trouble. She developed a fondness for chewing electric cords when she was about six months old, and by making sure she was in her crate I knew she would be safe. The last thing I needed was to wake up to an electrocuted dog!

She is nineteen months old now and will still go into her crate at bedtime and will fuss until I close the door for her.

Welcome to the forum. :smile2:

Best advise I can give you. Go to this website http://www.dogstardaily.com/free-downloads and download these books "Before you get your puppy" and "After you get your puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar and read them cover to cover before your puppy comes home. The downloads are FREE. You will be so ahead of the game. Good Luck. Can't wait to here more about you puppy.
