Hello, everyone!

I have been looking for an active sheltie group to learn from and to cry and laugh with. We will be a family of 8 pretty soon... 4 human kids and 2 sheltie puppies. (My husband think I'm nuts, but to see him with Jasper.. well, he really can't say much! LOL)

Our 4 human kids are 11, 8, 4, and 2 yrs old. Two girls, Briley and Hayley and the two youngest, George and Alex. Our family decided it just wasn't big enough.. After long research, we settle on the sheltie breed. And, out I went branching out to the sheltie breeders in the 4 State Area that were close by.

We found our first puppy a month later. Jasper is our little blue merle sheltie. Or as the girls love to tease, Jasper Casper! He has that face I just love on shelties! Very light colored blue merle with a zigzag of white mark on his coat near his back leg and spine. Full white collar. He is so precious! So much so, I gave up on trying to keep the ears glue down. LOL

Not even two weeks later, we were contacted by another breeder who had a little girl who she needed to place in a special home. She wasn't going to charge anything for her, but insisted she have a forever loving home. A sable merle female who will be tiny and who is born deaf. After much talk with the family, we could not tear ourselves away from this little girl! My husband name her Annie. The girls thinking it just not quite enough decided she needed a middle name, Rose. We will be picking her up in 2 weeks, by then she will be ready to come home and away from her littermates and her mom.

As for me, as soon as I heard about her, I wanted her right there and then. But, family powwow to make decision was still necessary. Mostly, b/c I too was born with a severe hearing loss in both ears and I feel I can relate to her even so I am not totally deaf.

What an interesting twist we have! We have gone back to the basic since Jasper is still learning his obedience training and added a mixer of ASL and dog obeidence signs. Our hope and we think he catching on wonderfully, he will be able to teach Annie or Annie can look upon him as an example.

but..... we still could use some basic help! How much do you feed a growing 14 weeks male sheltie? LOL He seem to be the bottomless pit and I for one, refuse to feed him to his heart content! Is 1/2 cup twice a day good enough with a few milkbone thrown in here and there?

Looking ahead, for those of you with adult shelties who you keep them in crates in the home while sleeping or as their private den to escape to for sleep among other things... what was the last size crate that you purchase?

Knowing I have written what my husband would consider a book! I will close this here for now. I will add an album for the one picture of Jasper I do have and the pictures of Annie Rose that her breeder has sent so far. Until my husband get my 2nd computer fix, I won't be able to download any new pictures till then.

Thank you for letting me join your group!

Welcome Beth!!

You are a very special person. You have a special needs furbaby coming into your life!! She was meant for you. You see I believe God works in various ways and I believe little Jasper was put there for your search . Thus placing your name out there just at the right time for Little Annie!! How wonderful! Welcome to the forum and looking forward to seeing pictures of you 2 Blue Merle furbabies.:smile2:

that is a beautiful thing your doing. I for one have a good friend of mine who is Deaf. I have learned quite a bit of sign b/c of it. Plus the signing has helped me alot when I have lost my voice since I have taught my husband, friends, mom, and grandfather some signing. They love it. I for one was planning when I get my new sheltie signs when I give the command as well. God forbid I lose my voice one day and dog feels what happened. So I would love to teach signs with voice command first. Then I use them one at a time not together to make sure sheltie is learning lol. My first sheltie did very well with it. At times I felt she understood the sign more than the actual command being said. I guess she had a preference since she was a sheltie that hated loud noises or people talking loud and fighting. Quietness was her favorite thing. It was like you can express more through being nonverbal than verbal. I know my sheltie was weird. She wasn't even a barker.

Welcome to the Group. As you most likely have already noticed with Jasper, Shelties are extremely intelligent and catch on easily to both verbal and hand signals. Having Annie join the family should not only make the humans happy, but Jasper will have another Sheltie for a playmate and companion.
I can only tell you what Spencer's breeder's Feeding Schedule advised:
Until 12 weeks of age: Morning - 1/4 to 1/2 cup kibble moistened with warm water. Noon - 1/4 cup dry kibble. Evening - 1/4 to 1/2 cup kibble moistened w/warm water and add 1 tsp canned dog food.
12 weeks to 8 months: Morning- 1/2 to 3/4 cup kibble moistened w/warm water. Evening - 1/2 to 3/4 cup kibble moistened w/warm water and add 1 tbsp canned dog food.
Spencer's crate was put away once he was housebroken and I am fortunate that he isn't a destructive dog. (:lol:He's a master at barking though!) But I think with young kids in your family, the dog(s) will need a :sleepy:quiet place where they can go to rest/sleep with no distractions. So I'd either keep the crate(s) set up or have a room where they could go to relax.
Hope some of this info is helpful to you.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Unsure if I am doing this right.. I will try to post the top 3 pictures I do have. Hubby did say he would get my 2nd computer back up later so I can start downloading digitial pictures to the computer to send later...

Jasper is now 15 weeks now, but pretty much he has not change a bit except those darn ears just wouldnt say put. After many attempt, I just kinda gave up glueing them.

And, for Annie Rose! Both are from the breeder about a week apart. She is going to be tiny tiny according to her breeder.

Hard to believe it less than 2 weeks away before I will have her in my arms!

For any who may think about what or how difference it might be to have a deaf dog... well, I have two books you can get from library or add to your collection at home that I am strongly all for.

"Hear, Hear! A Guide to Training a Deaf Dog" by Barry Eaton. I order mine from dogwise.com I believe it was. He basically cut right to the chase and tell you what to do for training in very simple terms. I absolutely love his book!

"Living with a Deaf Dog" by Susan Cope Becker. order this one from Amazon. it is a good book too!

Enjoy the pictures!!!

Oh for heaven's sakes, Jasper is an angel! That is one of the cutest little blue merles I have ever seen. Welcome to the group!

they are both so sweet! just curious is both of annie's parents merles? I was wondering because she has a lot of white on her face. thats usually a sign of double merles.

Both are too cute for words! I love the one dark ear and one light ear on Jasper and they're tipped, it's soo cute. I hope you enjoy your two bundles, once Annie comes that is and bless your heart for helping her out.
