HELP.... is a martingale collar the answer?

I've ordered a gentle leader-easy walk harness and a couple big bags of zuke's minis. The plan is to introduce the harness slowly, even though I don't think she will have a problem with it because she is quite used to the car seatbelt harness that is very similar.

I'll let you know how it goes. I love this forum, I've gotten so many good ideas from it.

I have always used a training collar (also referred to as a slip collar or "choke" collar) when walking my Shelties. I buy the kind made of rolled nylon, so it is gentle on the skin and coat. In my experience, the slip collar is the only type that a narrow-headed dog can't back out of, because the more they pull against it, the more it tightens. I don't trust martingales.

If your dog can slip out of a martingale, it is not fitted properly.

A martingale is the only collar our trainers will use, for safety reason on a dog.

I have Premier martingales on all 3 of my girls. They are very thin and you can't tell that they have them on at all. I will not walk my girls in any other kind of collar because they haven't ever slipped or backed out of their martingales.

This is unbelievable, it's like i'm walking someone else's dog!

The new gentle leader-easy walk harness came in on Saturday and we have been out walking even in the rain. It's like a whole different experience, she is now focused on me, walks without pulling ahead and we both just love being out there together for a walk!

She is always turning to look up at me (I'm sure the Zuke mini's help with that)...anyway thanks for all your suggestions! Summer is going to be a wonderful time for us!

What great news!

I am so happy that this is working for you.

I had a fair amount of luck with a head halter, unfortunately Vash didn't much care for it so he spent most of our walks trying to get it off his nose. This caused him to rub the same spot on his nose repeatedly and it got a bit raw.

Since then I haven't used the head halter, but I did enjoy how well it worked in curbing unwanted behavior and "treat finding" on walks. Now that Vash is a bit older and we are living in the city I've been considering giving it another try.
