Help me with new puppy

Hello and welcome! I have two sheltie puppies right now. Chinook is 7 months and Maia is 3 months. They were both so different from each other. You've been getting great advice here so far. Just be patient, he is just a little puppy.
As far as the collar goes, I don't keep one on them all the time. They wear one when they are outside only. I've read and heard of dogs getting hurt because they got their collars caught and could not free themselves when unsupervised, so I prefer to have them not wear one at home. Mine did not like their collars either! Chinook, more so than Maia, would scratch and try to get it off. But I was persistent and now they sit nicely when I get their leash and collars out. Good luck!

Yes, you're right, I get lots of great advise here. I also browse and found many information as much as funny post.

And things work great today. My wife getting along pretty well with the puppy. How old a puppy before you can begin give him a bath?

Hi! I didn't give mine a bath until they were about three or four months old. In winter, it's important that you get them dry to the skin before you let them outside. Be careful if you use a blow dryer because it can easily get too hot and burn their tender skin.

If he needs freshening, a little baby powder on his behind and ruff works wonders!

Ok, thanks, I'll try it. I'll wait until he calm a bit. These two days every time I come from work he begin to be more active. After few minutes he begin to run around pull my old t shirt that I use to play with him.

Last night he took my sandal and when I try to get it, he walk in fast pace to another room, when I walk to that room he walk back to the previous room. So I got to chase him around before I can get my sandal.

I live in tropical country so no winter here. Only two seasons, dry and rainy season. The weather is windy and we get rain almost every day for now (but sun still shine and the weather is quite hot at certain times, about 34 - 37 Celcius), it will stop around may when all we get is the hot shiny sun rays.

Are you trying to make me feel very jealous??? Because it is working. Right now, I will take rain any day over this deep freeze we are getting! Today, the high was -27 celcius and with the wind, -38!!!!! Yikes! Glad to hear that things are going a little better every day.

Just a word of caution, I would not let him play with an old T-shirt of yours as dogs cannot distinguish between an old T-shirt and a new one that he is not allowed to chew on! Just like shoes!!

And I want to see snow and experience winter, when I was just little kid, I even imagine that somehow my country changed into four season region, just because snow seems so good on TV for me.

I guess its a bit too late with the old T-Shirt, obviously he believes it was his not mine (I like the way he trot with stuff in his mouth). Anyway no accident with dirty laundry yet, we keep him away from the room where we put things like that. I just could't wait the moment he know that he should pee in our yard instead our living room.

Where do you live? I'm picturing Puerto Rico or Costa Rica or some equally lovely place!

.

And I'd like to see sand and experience perpetual summer!

Like Ania, it's -26C (-38C with the windchill today) and no let up for the next 3 days! So pathetic to see the pups go outside, tenderly lifting their paws out of the snow as they try to balance to do their business. Every see a Sheltie try to pee on 2 legs? :eek2:

So I've now got high energy pups in the house, because they couldn't burn it off as usual outside! :uhoh:

p.s. in his boredome today, Indy discovered novels! No, he did not learn to read to pass the time....he learned that books are great to chew! :rolleyes2:

I live in Asia, Chris, in Indonesia to be more exact. And the region where I live is only a bit higher than sea level (I think), so its quite hot here, specially at 12:00 - 15:00.

Lucky William doesn't found any of my novel yet, although he begin to develop some attachment with my sandal. I think he know that I will following him around as long as he had my sandal with him. He also have favourite spot in my small yard, where the dirt and grass grows. Last night I give up trying to clean him with baby powder. He like me rubbing his fur with the powder but he went right to that spot after that.

How long our pup going to be so playful? Funny I want him to calm a bit now, when probably going to miss all his silly run by then.

On another note, he decide to sit while he eat his dinner (last night) and breakfast (today). I have the picture but don't have time to transfer it to my PC. Once it done, I'll post the picture. Its so hillarious that my wife couldn't stop watching him ate his dinner last night.

William,

This is the question that plagues all of us!

If I told you that you won't see calm for many, many months, I hope it won't worry you! Your pup will be a pup for at least a year or more!

What you'll need to do once you've gotten some basics (come, sit) is start working on "off" and "settle" . The beauty of teaching "settle" is that playtime is when YOU say it's playtime, not the pup.

"Settle" involves engaging your pup in vigorous and active play for 30 second to a minute. Remove the toy (sit on it if you have to) and gently hold the pup while telling him to "settle". When he does "settle", praise and treat. Then repeat.

Wow -- Indonesia! I think that might just make you the most exotic member of Sheltie nation. Isn't it amazing how Shelties brought us together? :smile2:
