Actually, those prices aren't crazy high for a pedigreed purebred. Even though both my pups were "companion" only (not for show), both of them were between $600 and $800 Canadian dollars each.

those prices are not bad. Show quality here with good pedigree runs about $2000USD and depending on co-owned/other circumstances. pet prices are usually like barb said $600-$800USD.
I have a friend in China who paid $20000 for just one dog...and I didnt add an extra 0.....
and that was just one they brought 6 around the same price...

I read an ads of imported Sheltie from Thailand, its sold at about USD 1,000 here. Some other sell female Sheltie (not imported) at USD 800,-. Way over my budget but I guess its quite normal with all the fee and rules for bringing dogs from another country.[/QUOTE]
In Australia, Sheltie pups sell for about $900.00 (about $576 USD). Both male and female.
There is only about 200 breeders here in Oz registered with the Kennel Club and most breeders will only breed to get something for themselves, either to show or to carry on their lines.....(and we all know that not every litter produces something that is better than the parents so sometimes we end up with nothing to run on and the whole litter is sold as pets)..
Responsible breeders do all the required testing and we are not allowed to sell our pups before they are 8 weeks old.... Puppy owners are screened but unfortunatly sometimes end up in the wrong hands... and this is where back yard breeders come in.
My friend, can I ask if the breeder that you bought William from shows or competes with their dogs in any way, or are they just breeding their dogs to sell?
Would be interested to know the pedigree as I know the breeders with the kennel names you mentioned..
As now, another bone of contention is the fact that because Australia has such strict Quarantine Laws, our dogs are disease free and this makes export simple and very popular with agents. Every month in our Kennel Club journals you see hundreds and hundreds of puppies (all breeds) being exported to D McDougal in America. I think these puppies get as far as Hawaii where they are dispatched to pet shops etc with many of them ending up in Asia where they are very popular.
Responsible breeders here have, for a long time complained about this, our Kennel club supplying export certificates for these pups but the Club states that their hands are tied. Under the Fair Trading Act, breeders are intitled to sell their puppies for export if they so wish!!!.. and the club has to comply..
Don't get me wrong, pups are exported from here by responsible breeders, usually to someone they know or to a show home. I'ts the back yard breeders (as puppy farmers here don't usually register their pups here) that don't seem to have the breed at heart, only the dollars!

I'm not sure whether William's breeder join in any competition or not. But in the pedigree, William's sire and dam have something written in the title section. Although I tend to think that they join the competition before they were bought by my breeder.
By the way, William and his litter are the first litter.
And since I'm quite new with all these things about dog, I don't know what those title means. I'll take a look later and post it here.
