Hemangiosarcoma

Hi all,

I haven't been around much since we lost our Bella to kidney disease a year ago... and here I am again with more difficult news. Our Oreo started coughing a couple weeks ago after we started him on some meds for pancreatitis, and his breathing became fast and almost labored, so we ended up taking him into an urgent vet where x-rays showed he had an enlarged heart and fluid in his pericardium. A few different things could have caused that, we had the option of draining some of the fluid off, but we opted to wait until he saw a specialist so we knew what we were dealing with - if the fluid would come back in hours or days.

Well we somehow lucked out and got into a cardiologist who travels to our city a couple times a month - he happened to be in town that weekend and had a cancellation the next day. He did an echocardiogram and said our Oreo had a hemangiosarcoma (bleeding tumor) in his atrium, and it's bleeding into his pericardium. He told us, and all the research I've one online confirms, that even with the most aggressive treatment (surgery to remove it, chemo and radiation) it only would add about 6 months. He's almost 14 now, so we have decided to just spoil him and love him for whatever time we have left.

Surprisingly he is acting a little better now. He was super lethargic a couple weekends ago when this all was discovered. He's back to following me around the house and going up and down the stairs with me but still sleeps quite a bit.

Has anyone ever dealt with one of these in their pups heart? I would imagine we are either going to see him get super lethargic as it grows and puts pressure on his heart or it is going to burst and he's going to collapse. Neither sounds like a fun scenario at all. :( I really thought we were going to lose him within days of the diagnosis because he just wasn't doing well at all. I'm glad we at least have had more time to spend with him and to prepare ourselves for what will come to pass. He is the absolute sweetest dog and it just breaks my heart that this is happening inside of him.

Anyway, thanks for listening and for any advice you can give.

My heart breaks for you. We dealt with the same surprise collapse and diagnosis with Brooke, but it was in her spleen. Our saving grace was the Yunan Baio which stops bleeding. It comes in powder or capsules. We put it in her food with a bit of canned pumpkin or cottage cheese to disguise it. It gave her 4 more months of quality life. When the pills don't work anymore, that's it. I do know of someone with a Golden who had it in the heart, and that dog lived quite a while just on the Yunan Baio.

I'm so sorry. I used to check Brooke's gums several times daily to see if they were pink or getting paler, which indicates bleeding. Luckily it is not a painful cancer as such - the bleeding into Brooke's abdomen was uncomfortable, but she re-absorbed that. If they are anemic they definitely lose energy.

I hope you can have some good time left with Oreo, just love him to bits.

I have heard about that supplement.. where did you get it? Was it something you were prescribed by your vet or did you find it online? The urgent vet did mention something for the bleeding but at that time we didn't have a diagnosis and she didn't end up prescribing it.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this with your Brooke. :(

Kerri, I am so deeply sorry to read your news for Oreo. Like Sharon, we lost our Faelee last year to a massive tumor of the spleen that was bleeding internally...same situation where removal of the tumor would only buy a few months at most and they wouldn't be really quality months even though Faelee was only 9 and healthy otherwise. These sudden dx's are always such a shock. I know you will love Oreo and give him as much happy time as possible...cherish every day. Also as Sharon mentioned check his gums often for color...if he is bleeding badly internally his gums will lose their pink color. The other signs to watch for are stumbling/instability when walking and for Faelee it was also the inability to keep food down. There are no words anyone can say that make facing this any easier and my heart goes out to you and Oreo...may he have many really happy days with you before it is time to say good-bye.

I am so very sorry to hear of Oreo’s diagnosis. Having had one dog have cancer of his spine I can understand how difficult a time this is for you. Hopefully you can find the mushrooms and have some more time with him. Enjoy the time you have...dogs live in he moment so make the most of every day you have.

Your vet should have it - it can also be gotten online, or some Oriental markets might have it also. It is not hugely expensive and it works. When Brooke collapsed we had no idea why - rushed her to the vet, they gave her the Yunan Baio and within half an hour the bleeding had stopped. We were just stunned by the suddenness of it all. They gave her a sedative also to keep her quiet. We slept in the living room that night with her. I kept crying thinking she was going to pass. Then at 5 AM she gets up, shakes and says, "Where's breakfast???" I could not believe it. It was a bit of a roller coaster after that but, as I said, 4 more months of decent quality life and we just loved on her, hard. OK now I'm crying....

I forgot to say: Ask your vet about dosage - I think Brooke was 2 or 3 capsules twice daily. There is also a tiny red "emergency pill" with each package. You use that if the regular dose isn't working and you can tell they are bleeding. We had to use that rescue pill about the last two weeks. It is beyond amazing how it works, but it really does, until something ruptures.

Thank you so much for all that information! I will ask our vet about that. I really thought he only had a couple days last week after all of this started. He was so lethargic and his breathing was super fast...he wasn't eating, etc. But since then he has gone back to normal. His diet is still wonky because of his pancreatitis, but I've been boiling chicken for him and he's been good on that.

I'm so sorry about your Brooke. It's so hard to go through, and I can't imagine them collapsing like that. I guess I had better start preparing myself for that. I'm just glad I have some more time with him for now. Thank you again!
