He's British and Australian with some European line a couple of generations back...according to the breeder.

Not that i know the difference between the American or English lines... :-)

I think we need Narmorwen to debunk this? So just what are the differences between American and English lines. What Standards do Canadian and Australians follow?

I can help a bit with this I think....
and I hope it is not to long winded.

In Australia we follow the "Country of Origin" Standard. Hence we adhere to the UK Standard..
Although in th US, the Shetland Sheepdog was originally imported from the UK it did not take long before they had their own standard.
Although both Standards written are very similar, differences in wording can give a different interpretation. eg. In the preamble, The American Standard compares the relationship of size and general appearance between the Sheltie and the Rough Collie, to that between the Shetland pony and some of the larger breeds of horse. No comparison appears in the English Standard. The Shetland pony is a strong, sturdy, cobby pony with short, quite heavily boned legs, and very sturdy. The English Standard calls for something resembling more like the Arab or Thoroughbred which is represented as more nimble, graceful and refined.
The American Standard allows a dog to be a half inch bigger then the English Standard.
In reality there should be little difference but it is very unlikely that a US judge will put up an English type sheltie, nor an English Judge reward the sturdier Am. type.

As I have used both US and UK Imports, I can see benefit of utilising both types.
(if I could figure out how to post pics, I would be able to show you the comparison in the two types)

That about sums up the differences. in appreances Am Lines tend to be a heavier boned, then the UK. thus making them larger and bigger overall. Our heads tend to be going to more of the collie look as well changing the look and increasing the different look between the AM and UK lines.. There are some breeders who are doing imports and trying to blend the lines to minimize the differences.
 
Awww Miles is cute!! We've had a handful of people from Australia join this forum lately. It's nice to see this board so diverse in regards to people and shelties, haha. I hope you continue to enjoy this board as much as we all do.
