Holistic Flea and Tick repellant

Available at Walmart

Hi, I picked it up at Walmart. We were at the vet yesterday to see about heartworm medication. I showed him this Sargent's stuff and he said if it works he thought it was good to try it. He wasn't sure about its effectiveness, but it was worth a try.

He said, don't bathe her either just before or just after applying. It uses the oils on her skin to work.

I wish it was available at Walmart in Canada but it most definitely isn't, or in any store in Canada (that I know of) for that matter. I emailed the company but they haven't bothered to get back to me.

The United States seems to get all of the good products all of the time! I feel very ripped off some times!

I found this on the petsmart web site. It has all of the same ingredients as the Sergent's Nature's Guardian but a different name. If you click on customer reviews, you'll see its not very good.

I also came across this for Nature's Guardian. It looks as though there have been a lot of complaints about the smell, but there is a new formula that doesn't smell so strong. Maybe I'll still give it a try, if its true. Not sure, although I like that it's all natural, some of my family members as well as myself are very sensitive to strong scents, even natural ones. They can trigger migraines.

The Sentry is actually what I got when I ordered it. It's exactly the same thing as the Sergeant's, and if you read the box it's made by Sergeants. And yes, it is a VERY strong smell which really only lasts until the next day, but unless you hate cloves, we didn't mind it, and it's no stronger than Biospot, which is a very strong citrus smell that I (and the dogs) hated, plus it's chemical.

Pixie didn't like the clove smell, for the first few hours though. She paced until the scent receeded some. Now it's just a very light scent on her fur which I actually like. So far, no ticks or fleas, for what it's worth. And no seizures! Chris has had good luck with it too.

I thought so! I noticed that it had all of the same ingredients. Supposedly Petsmart near us sells it but I haven't gone and looked yet. Since hearing about the smell I'm still not sure if I'm going to try it. I think my husband and I could get over it but we may have to stop taking her to visit my parents as my Dad is extremely sensitive to strong scents, even natural ones.

We've been using the Sargent's stuff for about 2 weeks now.

We found our first tick this morning ( it was on her snout-hard to get off). It surely seemed to work before this--we were doing all sorts of outdoors stuff (now the the weather is improving) found ticks on us, but none on her.

We found the smell pepperminty and OK and first, then the cloves took over and it was VERY strong for a least a week. Now the smell is managable, but I wonder now that the smell has gone down, so has its effectiveness?

Also, her coat looked really oily and unattractive for almost a week.

I think we're going to try the Frontline. We haven't used it yet, before we using a collar, which hardly worked at all. But the Frontline is much more expensive. We'll see how the next month goes.

I see that some people who use the Sergeants have said they need to use it every two weeks rather than once a month. Perhaps Chris can weigh in on this since she's used it. I have no problem using it more often if I have to since it's natural and cheaper than Frontline. It was Frontline that Pixie was on when she had seizures. Also our dogs still got ticks with the chemical repellants, I don't think anything is 100 percent effective. Last year when Barkley was on Advantix he not only got ticks but Lyme disease.

Thanks for posting the information about the new Sergeants forumula that doesn't smell as strong, Ontario! I didn't see that when I ordered this. I might try and get that one down the road. Perhaps that one might work for you?

Hmmm. I just checked the box to see what formula I was using and saw that I had used Sentry Natural Defense. It has Peppermint 3%, Cinnamon 4.5%, Lemon Grass 4.5%, Clove 5% and Thyme 5%. Maybe that's why the sent was so strong.

We might have to try the real Sargent's one with the new formula.

We're seeing the same results as we saw with Frontline:
Yes, the ticks do get on them (we live in Tickville), but they try to crawl off. Those who bite die. No difference in how often we need to reapply. :biggrin2:

Yes, the scent is strong for the first 5 days or so, but it diminishes.

14 Ticks!

We just came back from a hike and pulled 14 of them off Ginger.

We went w/Frontline Plus after trying Sargent's for a month. The smell was a bit much for us.

So Frontline will kill any the ticks I didn't find?

Chris and Ann now that it's warm outside how is the Sargent's working? I do like the fact that it repels as well as kills.

Thanks.
