Holistic Flea and Tick repellant

Hi Barb...this product is all natural with no chemicals. I wanted to try it on Pixie, who has seizures, because I noticed a correlation between the months she has seizures and when she's on the chemical flea/tick products. Chris recommended the Natural Defense by Sergeants which is made up of essential oils, and I've used it for two months now with no fleas, ticks or seizures. This stuff has a strong smell of cloves, which some dogs seem to object to although most humans don't mind it. So that's the backstory on this thread!

Silly me! I'd forgotten about the seizures! Senility kicks in again! :o
 
Sadie is doing much better now and we can barely smell it on her now. Assuming we don't see any fleas/ticks on her, I'm going to try it again next month. If she reacts to it badly again then I'll wash it off and look for something else.
 
I've read your posts here as recently I've been finding ticks on my two and I don't want to use any chemicals on them. I've ordered te Sergeant's Guardian tick replellant that you have talked about, but now am second guessing my decision. I've been on line and have read many, many bad reviews, where the dogs and mainly cats have died from it!:confused2: Now I am really afraid that when it comes, if I should apply it to them or not. I don't want to and will not, do the chemical treatments, so I really want to do the holistic/natural, but this scares me a lot. Have any of you heard of the negative side effects of this product?
 
Are you sure you're looking at the right product? There is a Sergent's that also makes a spot-on with chemicals and I read a lot of bad things about it and animals dying (I think its lemon or citrus scented and is supposed to be less harsh but still has chemicals).

The one I've been using contains ingredients that I don't think could possibly kill a dog, they are 10% Peppermint Oil, 7% Clove Oil, and 3% Lemon Grass Oil. The inactive ingredients are simply Canola Oil, Vanillin and Citric Acid, period.

I too did a lot of research before buying it and found site's that complained about Sergeant's products in general and often listed Nature's Guardian, but I didn't find any specific instances where Nature's Guardian was used and a dog/cat died. I'd if you still have them I'd love to see the links, in case I missed something.
 
Ontario is right, Ania. You have to be very careful to order the correct Sergeant's product...they have several, and some are terrible. This one is marketed under the name Nature's Guardian or Natural Defense, and contains the products Ontario listed. This is the product you want:

We use the one for dogs under 15 lbs, even though our Shelties weigh more. It can be tough to find, though, and you'll have to search Google for it. This is the only place I've found it recently, Strictly Pets:

Pixie just had her third application and it's working well for us. We hardly noticed the smell this time and it didn't bother her at all!
 
I am just very confussed. I did order it from the web site you suggested here, because this is where I found out about this product and in an earlier post you said they ship to Canada. I ordered some for me and for a friend who has two dogs too. I would hate to give them something that is in any way dangerous to their dogs.

Hi Ania...if you notice, the complaints on the blogs all involve cats. There have been problems reported using this product on cats...I'm not sure why they have problems with it but there must be some feline reaction to one of the ingredients. Other than objecting to the smell of cloves with the first application, which both Ontario and I experienced, I don't know any dogs who have had problems with it.

We used sergeants natures guardian for our dogs after 2 weeks our pomeranian has suffered a seizure our Vet has said it is from this product please lets help get it off the market!!!


I have a dog (for now) that is in teetering between life and death because of Sergeant’s Nature’s Guardian. She was recently diagnosed with Addison’s Disease, which affects the adrenal glands. After bringing her home from the vet, I decided to try this product. Within 24 hours of using it, Diva was losing all control of her nervous system and started having seizures. The vet says it is because of the essential oils in this product, which could potentially affect ANY dog, not just one with Addison’s Disease. I am now facing a $300+ vet bill which I’ve not been able to contact Sergeant’s yet to try to get them to pay my vet bill or atleast put a warning on their packaging, but I have a feeling they will deny everything my vet says anyways. If ANY of you who read this review truly love your dog(s), PLEASE don’t buy this product! It’s not worth potentially killing your pet in order to save a few dollars!


DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!!! It Almost Killed my mom’s toy poodle. Two weeks after using this product he started having seizures. If you love your pet and you don’t want to lose them. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT....
 
I don't have an answer for you, Ania. I fear that any product like this can be harmful to a pet whose immune system is already compromised, like the dog with Addison's disease. That's just why I took Pixie off the chemical flea meds and put her on this one. I would really rather not have to use anything on them, but we live in a high tick area and at the moment, I am finding three to four ticks a day on my floors that the dogs carry in and fall off them. Sadly, there are horror stories about dogs on Frontline, Advantix, Biospot and all the others too. I think we take a chance whenever we introduce something to their systems like these things.

Some people have success feeding garlic and brewer's yeast as a preventative. It never worked for me, and now people will tell you that too much garlic and hurt them too. There just isn't an easy answer!
