Horse Ranches & Shelties

I remember that a few months ago, someone posted it was their life-dream to work at a horse ranch, but couldn't go because of their sheltie. I hope someone can find whoever it was.

I was watching TV on Animal Planet, and the show was about an over-active bi-black sheltie, named Chase. They were going to place him on a horse ranch, but Chase kept herding and snapping at the horses. The dog trainer was able to teach Chase with a "leave it" that he wasn't to herd the horses. In fact, they taught him to stay at a matt outside the horse ring, while his cowboy-Dad was training horses. He was a huge success at the horse ranch. I guess I should warn anyone who finds the show that, in the end Chase was hit by a car a few months after he found his forever home. Very sad.

But the good thing might be that whoever wanted to work at a horse ranch, might be able to train their sheltie to live there and love it. It was on animal planet, "Underdog to Wonderdog", Episode 12, Original Air Date: 01-16-10.

If you know who I'm talking about, maybe you could tell them about this.

I saw it- was a good show- but sad in the end :(

That was a very sheltie-oriented show. THe Underdog wa sa sheltie and both of the dogs they were training for 'Angels on a Leash' were Shelties as well. It was really cool but finding out in the end that Chase died was a shocker.

One cool thing that did come out of it was that the rancher wanted a 'Man's Dog' and not some sissy girlie dog and everyone thought of Shelties.. Made me walk with my head just a bit higher..with Deja on her pink leash..
 
Oh dear. I was reading that and thinking - yes, I should get hold of it because maybe I could do the same to teach Deska not to herd cars. Then I read the last bit about him being run over. Maybe not a good idea.

That part wasn't shown- one of the team members that works with the dogs to match the dog and home gave an update at the end of the episode where he related what happened. The actual episode had lots of good stuff in it- if you can find it, it's worth watching. Here it comes on right after Victoria Stillwell (It's Me or the Dog) on Animal Planet on Sat night.
 
I have 3 shelties here at my farm. I spend a large part of my day training horses. They do great with dealing with the horses, after they learned that they could NOT heard me while I was riding. Kai is still working on that. lol! They love the play time and get to work of that extra energy on long trail rides. They have also been helpful when I had a horse get out, and put that hearding instinct to good use! They also will keep the pasture horses from fighting over hay at feeding time. I think I would like to try to start Kai in hearding training in the spring.
 
hahah yeah that was me !! I'll be checking it out ... I would be super worried about her trying to follow me while riding for sure ... I just dont know how well I would be able to supervise her and would be worried when I dont see her probably ...

Its still a work in progress... Were considering a lot of things and may go out there for a trial run next summer (of 2011)

Taking the idea slow ... That will be cool though, I will definitly look it up and watch it
