Housebreaking weirdness

I am once again asking for your advice re: my seven-year old Sheltie, who came to me as a retired showdog and was fairly housebroken, with accidents. It seemed like he would do well for a while, then get into "accident" mode. A few months ago, he got totally off schedule and only wanted to "go" when I was at work or asleep. Not good. So now he sleeps in a crate and is back on a good schedule. But he has added a new wrinkle of weirdness--he won't go unless I am with him. I have a large fenced-in yard, which he has been using on his own for two years; now when I put him out he will not budge off the patio until I go outside and walk around the yard with him for a little while. He just stares at the house, waiting. We do this morning and night; it's working pretty well and there have been no more off-schedule accidents in the house, but it kind of defeats the purpose of fencing the yard. Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this new and strange behavior? It would be really helpful if he didn't require an escort... :smile2:

I guess he just likes company. After all, our Shelties don't think we can go alone either. I guess you're stuck with some odd bonding time.
