How did you raise your Sheltie in an apartment? Regret starting to sink in.

You got so many responses! I just wanted to add a few things. I rarely use the name 'Sheltie' with people - they are Sheepdogs and you are more likely to get an energetic dog than not. They are not lap dogs or a toy breed, too many people assume small=easy. Some times our dogs are not barking out of fear but for fun - because they have so much energy. My boys always barked at loud cars and trucks because it was fun, my current female barks at every car that goes past because she's high drive and is excited by movement.

Despite what everyone is saying, my girl could not hold on overnight consistently until she was 2yrs old. She was small and her bladder/sphincter took a long time to develop. She was checked out several times by vets and all said she's just late developing, not unusual. I made a 'potty' by putting some fake grass over a large container lid with kitty litter in it. She used this overnight when I didn't wake to take her out. During the day she was fine - but she did have access to a doggy door when i was home and the potty when I was at work. My last boy also wasn't house-trained until he was 6mths - and then when my dogs hit adolescence they have the usual adolescent mishaps.

Honestly, getting a puppy can be over-whelming, so don't beat yourself up - it gets better once they get through adolescence, which thankfully doesn't last as long as human adolescence. Going to obedience classes is a great idea, it's not so much about him learning new things as it is you both learning to work and communicate with each other. It really will get better.

Oh they're not as smart ahaha. Maybe those dogs have a weaker attention span? Theon is starting his first obedience classes this Saturday. He's not an overall genius (bangs his head on surfaces a lot) but he picks up commands like sit, lie down and touch a certain object relatively quick. He has trouble with the stay command half the time.

What did you do that helped him become less fearful of cars? Just simple exposure through walks? I'm going to try playing the desensitizing noises as one person here suggested.

I think I got him when he was just starting his terrible twos phase. He was so well behaved at his old home which I visited twice and during the first two days at my home. Most Shelties at his first home were less calm than him including his sister and aunt. A bit disappointing because I was specifically looking and waiting for a mellow Sheltie that some lucky owners come across occasionally. I think the new environment might have triggered the phase. Getting a new treat puzzle toy for him in the mail soon. I skipped a couple of difficulty levels because he figured out my makeshift dixie cups one pretty quick. :\

My youngest is a nervous Nellie around cars but through repeated exposure he's getting better.
These two videos are from today and I was quite amazed at how well he did. The down stay was at a busy intersection and the other was walking along a busy street...no reaction at all!

Oh my god. Two years?!

I use Shetland Sheepdog and Sheltie interchangeably. Theon used to try to herd me and I kind of miss it, it was quite cute. I saw him doing it to the daycare staff as well. He definitely barks when he's excited or frustrated. So far, he doesn't care about neighbors walking past my door.

I think I came across your dog playing flyball on youtube. I googled "Flyball Sheltie" it was the first video result that came up. Really cute!

How cute! More from the Sable clan! So jealous that you can walk while it's sunny outside. Texas weather is not kind.

We had our heat in July, August has been quite cool but we still get our walks in early in the morning (we left at 9 and back at 11). Piper (the smaller mahogany one) is a tad overweight so he needs to get out and walk. He's such a couch potato!

Sca was big on guarding. When he went to the groomer he would set behind her watching her once he was done. When I crashed the bike and went to the Sheltie party he played with the others but it was funny that in almost every picture I was in you could see him in the background.
