How did you raise your Sheltie in an apartment? Regret starting to sink in.

You should never wean them off treats...even my boy who's 4 whom I do competitive obedience with still gets treats. You can eventually randomize when they get a treat, kinda like a slot machine but if your teaching anything and you want them to learn you'll have to reward.

Oh I am randomizing and won't stop using treats then, but eventually they'll do it just to obey right?

I have never used anything else than my dogs normal food pills as a reward
and they have worked on everyone,
but of course it requires - not to expose the puppy to other "unhealthy" things

Minnie (5y) will still do anything for her tiny food pill

and it is small at only 1 cm = 0.3937007874 inches :biggrin2:

I'll use cheerios in moderation. Food pill?

Does anyone have any advice for helping him adjust to city noises? Being a country boy, he freaks out on the leash when he hears a moving car. I read a tip that said to not react or comfort him that much so he can see that the noise isn't a threat. It's been almost month since he moved to the city, so I'm wondering if I should change my strategy. If he doesn't start warming up to the outside, then I worry that potty training won't progress that much.

If I see any improvement, I'll walk around him around the mall early in the morning where there's no cars. Lots of people walk their dogs there.

Food pill?
Minnie's regular feed?/ food? are small tiny pellets?/ pills? of 1 x 1cm
Hanne's translations don't always match our meanings
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Yes, I really understand that it can be difficult to understand a part of what I write
- because I have to fight with Google translate every time.
Many times I don't even understand myself - what I have written - when translated :hide

- then I have to try to write a sentence in several ways until it makes sense to me - in English

One of the worst:wink2:
- I wrote in Danish slå ikke hunden ihjel "do not kill the dog" was translated to "kill the dog" :eek2:

Yes, as soon as your pup understands the commands is when I start weaning them off the treats! You can phase them out over time. Shelties are so smart anyway! They get it sooner than later!

My sheltie is so shy. He seems to do better with praise! I have him enrolled in a beginner obedience class and I have to say, most of the dogs in the class are really slow! Or it might be the owners are just not working them enough outside of class.

I understand your problem with loud noises. My boy is frightened too. Just walking around and cars driving by scared him. Now he is much less reactive! Anyway, small bits of exposure works wonders.

Good luck! So many good tips coming your way! Keep up the good work!
