How, in general, is the breed with cats?

I'm teaching Jasmine to behave with my cat. Of course, the cat's a bengal so there may not be any hope there. The cat loves to accost Jasmine and Jasmine retaliates. We're getting better, Jasmine's only a year old but she has a strong streak of crazy, hence "Spazzy Jazzy". If she isn't getting my attention, she'll knock whatever I'm holding out of my hands (or arms if it's the cat). When they misbehave, I send them to opposite corners and treat them for leaving each other alone. I know they'll turn out fine eventually, but Jasmine needs to learn not to instigate AND not to react.

My old girl is a golden retriever and she lets the cat do whatever it wishes. Maybe it's just her age, might just be her breed. As was stated, every animal is different.

Good luck!

Oh my. Cookie LOVES our cat Gilbert. They play together like two dogs. Gilbert likes Cookie too but it is a brotherly kind of rough housing love. They respect each other's space and when Gilbert is done playing Cookie will leave him alone but they play every single morning and evening. I might even say Cookie plays better with Gilbert than he does any dog.

Here is the evidence.

My Watson lives with three cats and he loves them all. Petey is his gentle playmate, Buddy Tom his rough and tumble chase each other around the house playmate (Buddy Tom might actually have been a sheltie in a former life..), and little Pixie is his snuggle buddy.

I know each dog is an individual, but what have your experiences been with Shelties and cats?

I always introduce them slowly (cat's kept in a separate room for awhile, dog is allowed near them only while on leash, etc.).
Two of the cats LOVE dogs. One has bonded with my Min Pin mix and the other rubs all over my elderly Pyrenees mix.

I am deffinatly going to look for a dog that has been tested with cats, I just want to know if there are any prey drive issues.

Thanks.

I recently adopted an adult sheltie who had never lived with cats. Now my cats are dog savvy having been raised with herding dogs (border collies) their whole lives. There was a brief (less than a week) where my sheltie thought cats were super fun to chase. That ended after one of the cats decided turn about is fair play. Now that cat and the sheltie are actually buddies and the sheltie will groom the cat. Weird.

All of the shelties in my life have gotten along well with our cats. I often refer to our cat Caruso as Annabelle's cat, because those two are ALWAYS together. They play, she humps him, he gets annoyed by that, then they curl up together to go to sleep.

Clarabelle has been trying to teach our cat Percy to clean her ears, but he just isn't figuring it out. He'll let her clean his ears, but simply won't do it for her.

Evil Purrfessor Little Puss was 4 months old and feral when she moved in and she loves to cuddle up in their long fur.

My first sheltie was Brodie. When I had my cat Harry, those two were inseparable. One day, I saw Brodie pulling Harry around by his back leg. So, of course, Brodie got reprimanded. Apparently, they were playing though, because Harry immediately turned his back to me, flipped me the tail and went straight to Brodie to play some more. Brodie would even rub his teeth along Harry's belly. They died a year to the day apart from each other and are buried together.

I think it's largely the cat's personality that will shape how the sheltie treats that cat. We have one cat who is feral and terrified of everything that moves, the dogs are VERY wary of her and avoid her, they will often growl at her because she has swiped at them many times in the past.

We then have Garfield who was a kitten when the boys were puppies, they don't play together but they definitely trust each other, they sleep together (when it's not too warm) and Garfield is happy being accidentally knocked over by the dogs, not a sound out of him, he's a hardy little cat after being raised by two shelties lol.

Four Shelties, four reactions to Louis the Shetland Sheepcat:

Layla: "Meh."
Bitsy Boodle: "He scares me. When he stares at me while I'm lying on the bed in the living room, I have to get up and let him have it. But if I see him outside, I bark at him and chase him under the barn."
Annie Laurie: "I hate him. Period. I will snarl if he enters my person space -- which is a Circle of Annoyance ten feet in diameter."
Beckon: "Louis is my best buddy! He asks me to chase him! I can snap at his face and he doesn't move, even if I let my teeth scrape his fur! I love him! He is my sheepcat!"
