How many of you use Revolution?

Just wanted to be sure. I would ask your vet if you can purchase a few to help you deal with the flea issue. Not sure if it'd be more worth it to purchase it that way.

Also, I agree, hopefully someone can answer your questions about Advantix. It's funny though...I had asked my vet about Frontline Plus not working on fleas (before my issue), they stated that they haven't heard anything. Next time I went in for the Advantix cuz I had fleas, they stated that they discontinued stocking Frontline altogether. Interesting.

IMHO, if you want to know about Advantix, I'd ask around your neighborhood, local vets, maybe daycares, etc. Only the people that live really close in the area will know.

At the time I had my issues with Frontline, I had only moved a few miles from my last apt, where Frontline was working fine.

Good luck.

That is so weird!! I'd like to know why that is! It sounds almost like the issues with antibiotics where bacteria constantly evolve. I've been reading threads about Trifexis too. Some say its very toxic-but then again I think any medication can be dangerous. I'm do sick of hearing constant scratching and seeing my dogs suffer I am willing to take my chances with a new "toxin" if it might ease their discomfort. (Claussens digging his neck as I type this). I'm interested in hearing from others that have had to take control of an infestation by switching meds-this is a first for me.

I have been using Revolution for a number of years now on the dogs and cats here. So far we have been flea free even on the barn kitties. However, if I did have a problem I would be cleaning everything, including all bedding, curtains etc and using a premise spray every 10 days until they were gone. I would throw out the vaccuum bag or spray - depending on type of vaccuum you have and do the undersides of all furniture. I would give every one of my animals that comes into the house Capstar on the day that I did this. Jack, one of our barn cats, loses hair on the site of application every month but it is back before the next application. Once I had the fleas out of the way I would use Drontal to get rid of any tapeworms. I do the animals once a month but if we are going somewhere that fleas are a bigger problem then I would do them every 3 weeks. I only wish it was faster on ticks. If ticks were my biggest problem then I would have to use Advantix as it repels them as well as kills those that do get on much faster than Revolution. I might hate these pesticides having to be used but I figure it's better than the problems that arise for the dogs or cats, not to mention me, if they are not.

Thank you for the input! I wish I could vacuum the undersides of my couch! It's so heavy I think I'll need to find someone to help me with that one lol. I just talked to my vet and she recommended doing Comfortis for 3 months..she said that clients are saying it isn't taking care of fleas as good as they'd like..but my vet has always been meh about Revolution. They said if I try Comfortis and a new dose of Frontline (I was using a kit) and the Frontline still doesn't work, then BC if their guarantee they can send someone out and assess my situation as to why it's not working and perhaps pay for a different treatment...ok we'll see. Nothing seems to work right anymore! Last night my brand new tv decided it wants a new panel...thank goodness for warranties! :gaah

Lysette, I know the feeling. This morning I have been looking everywhere for hay. Southern Ontario is going through drought conditions and our hay fields were hit with army worms. I got about 200 bales off a 600 bale field and many lost entire crops. I need at least another 300 bales and am now looking hours away to find some. In the meantime, Tinsel needs to undergo an anesthetic on Wednesday to remove the stitches left in from his neuter. We will also be removing his rear dew claws, a necessity, doing a bunch of xrays and repeating thyroid tests. Since we don't want to do anesthetics any more than needed, we are doing it all on the same day. My son got married on Saturday, the horses have a vet checkup and shots on Thursday, I need to get at least one barn kitty to the vet for a wellness check so that I can buy enough dewormer for tapes for the 3 which tides them over until October. It seems like it never ends! Make sure you do the vaccuum. If you don't you will just keep the cycle going. I'll be thinking of you.

I live in Southern Ontario, which is approx. 4 hours away from you. I think our climates are pretty similar.

We've used Advantage for years on our cats and dogs with no ill effects. We used to have a heck of a time with fleas on our cats but have never had a problem since we started using Advantage. It does not treat ticks though.

This year we started using Trifexis (cheaper than buying a flea topical and Heartguard seperately) and have been very happy with it. I haven't found so much as one flea on my shelties since using it and they've suffered no ill effects.

I've read the same warnings about Trifexis but really, you need to be careful about all topicals. They all contain toxic chemicals which can be harmful if you have a sick or sensitive dog or if the instructions are not being followed.

I didn't find anything alarming about Trifexis that was not already mentioned on the company web site. No canine deaths except by dogs that were sick in the first place or not treated properly. I also noticed that many people did not use common sense and kept using it after their dog suffered and adverse reaction.

FYI - There are many many threads on the forums about topicals, particularly Revolutuon and Advantix. To find them you can use the Search function at the top of the page. :smile2:

My! You're a lot busier than I am..I'll take my complaint back lol. They said the Comfortis will have fleas falling off in 30 minutes..it's been an hour and haven't noticed anything yet (keeping my dogs on a white sheet in their crates). Maybe their fur is too long? Yep, vacuum vacuum vacuum, just finished doing it for the second time today. Thank you for your support, everyone here really helps me feel a little less frazzled :smile2:

This is a familiar situation!

We used to be a Sentinel household. Then, of course, Novartis suspended production. About the time we ran out of Sentinel, we also had a big tick outbreak. Sentinel doesn't protect against ticks, and Sentinel wasn't available anyway, so we had to find a new flea med AND heartworm med. Well, we were lucky to find that we could still get our hands on Interceptor (Sentinel sans flea protection), but that still left us searching for a new flea med.

Revolution is definitely one we're considering when our Interceptor runs out. In the meantime, we're on Frontline Plus for fleas/ticks. We had considered Advantix, since it seems to be the most effective, and both repels and kills fleas/ticks... but we immediately put it out of the running due to the fact that it is apparently deathly toxic to cats. According to the K9 Advantix II warning label: "DO NOT USE ON CATS. Do not allow your cat to come in contact with a treated dog for 24 hours." Well, we've got a cat, and in order to really keep her and the dog separated for 24 hours, we'd basically have to board the cat, and that is definitely not something we want to add to our monthly expenses.

I know you've been researching this topic to death, so I'm sure you ran across the "death to kitties" warning on Advantix, but thought I'd toss it out here, just in case.

Thank you for the input! Advantage and Trifexis I have been considering also! I spent about 3 hours last night jumping thread to thread about different topicals. I've decided to try the Comfortis for a few months-and Frontline (The vet told me I could reapply it now since I stripped it off their coat when I used a flea shampoo). I'm thinking maybe the problem was I was using the large doses of medication and measuring them with a syringe..1 large dose lasted me 4-5 months..I think it expired after being open that long and that's what happened. So, Frontline..here's your last chance. Then I'm probably on to using your method of Trifexis and Advantage..my vet said Revolution wasn't as effective on fleas around here...who knows though. Thanks again! Btw I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY...spent a lot of time in Canada...we were probably close to being neighbors back then lol. Well, here goes nothin :fl

That would make sense if what you have is expired.

My vet actually recommends Frontline/Frontline Plus, but its not available in Canada. I used it for one season and had no flea or tick issues. But it was too hard to get so I only used it for that one season.

Good luck!

Update

:hide Well, I've officially had my blonde moment of the year. I've been giving my pets Frontline Plus in a kit form to save money. I started using this method in December and assumed it was working because I had no fleas..but come to think of it I started seeing signs of flea dirt but just thought it was dirt from my cat that rolls in the dusty driveway. Well, here we are a full on flea infestation later and I'm wondering what went wrong. I took out my last 4mL dosage of Frontline, and thought...hm, if there's only 4 mL in here and between 2 dogs (they get 1.3 mL each) and 2 cats (0.5 mL each) why the heck is one tube lasting me for months??? Turns out, I've been reading the syringe wrong this whole time. Instead of giving my cats a half a mL, I've been giving them half of a TENTH of a mL. Call me crazy but I always thought a mL was just a few drops..nope. (Shows how much i retained from doing labs in chem class) Don't know why I didn't see this sooner, I'll chalk it up to gping through a bad breakup in December, then a move all by myself, and other crud as well...but I'm thanking all that is holy and unholy that the situation wasn't the other way around (giving them too much).
