How much do you turst your dog at start line?

Yes ,there was but this one is asking about trusting your dog at the start line and :wink2:how much of a lead out you can do!!!

So why could this not have been included in that thread? I get confused when there are multiple threads about the same topic. Recent example- the 4-5 threads on Trifexis. I think didn't I already post about this?:confused2:

Trust start line stays!!

Are you really saying that you can put either of your dog into sit anytime anywhere and there will be no level 10 distraction that will make them break their stay?
And I suppose you are willing to bet $1000 on it ?

YES, I am saying that and I would bet you 1000 any time any where!!!!!!! Bring it on and bring your checkbook!!!!!
:biggrin2:

Start Lines and trusting your dog

Sorry to confuse you!!!

I don't get the point, SheltieChe? Maybe I misunderstand... but
once you trial, you'll see and probably agree that a lot of handler/dog teams have routine... I am sure even demigod SG does :wink2:

So, if that routine is a start line stay and the dog gets to reward himself with a release to get to do their favourite thing in the world (because Ashley has never let them break their stay and self reward) Ashley and her dogs have built such value for that behaviour then I am also conident that's what they ARE gonna do consistently :biggrin2:
Seeing Lexi I dare say agility is her favourite thing even over bunnies :biggrin2:

Start line behavior is "stay until released" impulse control behavior. Yes, you can train in to perfection at agility ring but can you do same when your dog lets say fence fight at your home? Or will your dog break a sit if someone knocks on the door? Can you put your dog and ask for exactly same behavior and your dog will listen? Exclude different building and different distractions behavior by itself is exactly same, is not it? Stay until release no matter what distraction/arousal...
Since agility is very small part of our life with dogs I do not see start line stays as something that special. Sit means sit, stay means stay. Part of total lifestyle. Do we have distractions level ten when my boys will break stay? Yes. Does not happened at start lines but then again, I am more concerned with boys behavior in home life. Do I trust my dogs not to break start line at agility- sure. Will I trust my dog not to break a stay on a busy street corner- nope.

well, since this is the agility part of the forums I am going with start line stays meaning START LINE stay at agility trials.
We are indeed dealing with sentient beings so nothing is ever guaranteed, so not sure why we're being nit picky :D
Or like I said I am probably missing the point since I thought it was all just a goodnatured question in a agility competitive kinda sense

I was just as confused, Calliesmom!

But to reply, yes I trust my dog on start line stays, and I walk as far as is reasonable depending on the course. If sometime in the future he breaks his stay, no big deal - we'll go back to the training/proofing board. I really consider trials to be a fantastic evaluation tool - I encourage everyone to trial - you don't have to wait until your dog is perfect. :smile2:

Just my 2 cents-it is rare that a start line problem doesn’t have its origin somewhere else in your everyday life.
By no means I identify agility competitors as failures if they do not have great start lines. Because if one chooses to browse video clips one will find all kind of "high royalty" agility competitors who do not have great start lines. Does not have to be that way but here you have it...
I remember Silvia Trkman saying something on her blog ... I don't dare to have start line stay from the fear of completely ruining them... :biggrin2:

Do you trust your dog for start line stays?

Start line stays you see as something not that special?Really???You know nothing about trialing.I would like you to tell that to the people who train their dogs that start lines aren't that special.:biggrin2:

It is two totally different questions. One is asking do you trust your dogs at the start line and how much of a lead out can you do and the other is how solid is your sit stay at the start line?

seems the same to me- if your sit stay at the start line is solid then you trust your dog and can lead out wherever you want to go.
