How to find Pedigrees

I second what everyone else says.

I'm going to put this very bluntly... and I hope you do not take it the wrong way and get mad and leave. A reputable breeder would not have sold you a breeding quality dog. I'm sorry, but that is the way it is. If you do not have any interest in putting a dog in the show ring to finish his championship... you would not get a dog that is of breeding quality. It took me two years of proving myself in the show ring with "starter" dogs before sheltie people started taking an interest in me and a breeder trusted me enough to sell me something that is of quality.

Why in the world would you want to breed something when you don't even know what his pedigree is like? Do you know what any of the diseases are that affect shelties? The common ones? The least common ones? These are babies that you are talking about bringing into the world... they don't ask to be here. It is your responsibility to make sure they are healthy and happy for life!! and go to good homes... I don't care if you don't own the bitch...

Breeding is not for the faint of heart!!!

Has your dog been tested for hip dysplasia? CERFed? Thryroid issues? vwD? I certainly wouldn't put off testings especially when you don't know what lines he came from.

I hope you don't think badly of us as it appears that we are beating on you.

Believe me when I say that folk on this forum have alot of experience when it comes to breeding do's and don'ts.

All the advice you have received so far is bang on.

If you truly want to consider breeding your pup, then the best advice I can offer is find yourself a mentor who already breeds Shelties in your area. Ideally he/she would be breeding pups for the show ring and would be able to help you find your pup's pedigree as well as give advice as to which dogs to breed with.

What many of on the forum are against, is backyward breeding. This is the notion where "I think my dog is really cute and would love to make more cuteness!" Or I want to make money....

You get the drift I'm sure. You won't get alot of support for indiscrimante breeding here, I'm afraid. Sorry if that is not want you want to hear/

No, AKC uses the credit card information to verify that you are who you say you are before they give you access to any dog's information. Since you will be able to make changes to their records from that program, they want to ensure that they have the right person.

As to breeding, I personally would not choose to breed a dog where I don't have basic pedigree information, because I also then don't have basic health information on any of the family. Which means I could easily produce and sell to unsuspecting people dogs with serious health issues that they get to deal with for 15 years. I don't want the guilt associated with that, which is why I am very careful who and what I breed. Nobody wants a dog that costs them $3000 a year in vet bills.

Here here, doesn't 50 Shelties sound like a backyard breeder to anyone?
