Hyper and bites

Our experience with Tex was much like Ontario's Sadie. No real issues with biting but the usual nippiness that we just corrected much like Ontario.

He actually was not hyper most of the time but he definitely had his moments. He did have his happy hour where he would get really hyper almost daily around 9 PM or so. Happened like clock work!

Like Ontario mentioned Tex has mellowed out over time. We really started to take notice at about 14 months or so that he was just much more chilled though I think it was a gradual thing that happened over time. He's now a year and half and certainly still has his moments and expect to him to continue to mellow.
 
I was introduced to the ball by a trainer on one of those Yahoo forums! I watched a video of it being used. Looks like fun and something Romeo does with smaller toys already. I'm looking for a place to get it online at a good price but I got a basketball in the meantime to see if he'd take to herding it. I couldn't find a bigger ball (one his height) at Toys R Us!

They definitely do mellow down eventually but the training speeds things along and gets some necessary rules into their little heads. You might feel really frustrated at some point and wonder when that day will ever come!! Then one day you will stop and think 'hey, he's not quite as nippy and hyper anymore'.
 
Victoria Stillwell, on "It's Me or the Dog" has had advice on how to get a dog to quit biting. You give a HIGH-toned squeek, cross your arms, put your hands under your arm pits, and turn around to ignore the dog. We have been using that with our 14 week old sheltie, and it works fine!!

I never thought of larger balls and herding dogs together! I must give this a try! I can just imagine the boys herding this ball around the yard! What fun!
