ID Tags

We got stainless steel, which did stain Buffy's fur. I would recommend plastic. Actually, I've been meaning to order a new one.

I would def. recommend putting your (cell) number on, not your vet's. With Sheltie luck your dog will probably get lost on a Sunday or an evening and the vet won't be available then. If your dog is lost you will be clinging to your cell phone and ready to answer right away. Waiting 8 hours till the vet opens again could mean a lot of distance for your dog to cover.

The other day we actually found and returned a lost chocolate lab to his owner while on a walk. I guess the owner had two dogs at a time and one dog slipped his leash when the owner was grabbing a treat or something. Anyway, it was a Friday night and it was dark out, so I am sure that calling the vet would have been no help when we found the dog. Poor puppy was pretty scared when we found him, but I'm so glad the owner eventually found us. I'm also happy that we had a dog leash with us and my husband; I just clipped Buffy's leash on the other dog and he held Buffy while we waited.

And what information do you put on the tag? I thought about putting my vet's phone number, rather than my personal number, particularly since I might be moving in the next 6-8 months (and therefore my home number may change?). Or my cell phone?

I have the laminated plastic tag. It came from Boomerang tags. It is black with white sandwiched in the middle. I bought the bone shape. Measures 1 1/2 inches. It seemed to be the best shape for getting all the info on without having points to catch stuff. One side has my address. There are four lines. First is the house number. #2 is the street address. #3 is the city and state. #4 is the zip code. The other side is three lines. The first line is my last name. #2 & 3 are phone numbers.

As far as phone numbers. I would list your personal cell phone. And you could put three numbers on one side, instead of putting your name. Think about listing a friend or relative's number. That way in case you are traveling or sick and the dog has gotten loose from whoever was taking care of the dog, there still would be someone that the finder could get a hold of after hours or on the weekend.

As someone mentioned, I don't have the dog's call name on her tags. I don't advertise that she is chipped. She also wears a dog control tag that is applicable for the county in which I live. It has a number and the county's phone number. If she has lost her collar then hopefully the chip is her backup. I also feel that the chip is my proof that I am the owner.

If you have a metal tag, just clean it with lacquer thinner or fingernail polish remover to remove the oils. Then you can spray coat with polyurethane or as someone mentioned clear fingernail polish.

Well, being a fantasy nut, and given that "my bethoral ring" from David is also a Celtic knot (I could have asked for bling but I opted for the sentiment instead - what was I thinking??). So, therefore, if I don't get diamonds, then neither do my pups!
