Ideas for weight gain

Chicken dogs. The kind they make with fillers like corn syrup, not the all-beef variety. Dogs love them and they're easy to eat and digest. I gave these to my last dog as treats, thinking I was giving him something wholesome. He really put on weight fast, and I only stopped the practice when my daughter virtually ordered me to stop giving them to her dog because she was putting on weight.

Tully had the same issue when she was younger (not liking kibble and being over active and skinny). The main thing I did was mix mince with her kibble - I know a lot of people with performance and working dogs that do this. A couple of other ideas: sunflower seeds are nutritious and can be sprinkled through the kibble. Oatmeal is also a great, healthy bulker that you can mix the kibble in (Deska loves oatmeal).

One other idea, I didn't use it for bulking up Tully, but I give the dogs full cream lactose free milk once a day (to give one of Deska's tablets). They only like the full cream. But since giving that I have had to cut back their meals because of chubby.

carbs

I concur with sweet potatoes, or any carb because runners eat those to give them needed energy. If he is that active and muscular then he is burning through calories to maintain those muscles. Both Kaleigh & Savannah like potatoes in any form, I had to cut back on Kaleigh's intake, because she was packing it on, and increase Savannah's because she doesn't maintain weight-probably will change with being spayed, but she isn't as motivated by food as Kaleigh. Kaleigh will eat until she exploded.

What about adding some cooked chicken and veggies to his food? Zoey does not put on weight and she is boney feeling to me, my vet says she is fine. She likes her food and just burns it off. Never thought I would hear of a sheltie that did not like food. I know you don't want to switch but wonder if he just does not like that kibble?

Lily burns calories like Six did, I supplement her Fromm 1/3c with a 1/4c per meal of Now Fresh small breed (small breed higher in fat)..and it looks like cat food so its a win :) Since starting to feed her this in the fall shes put on more weight and coat. Six gained too much on him so I had to cut it out..lol. So it does work! I will probably have to cut her down when it gets warmer as they dont burn as many calories in the warmer weather...if we ever get warmer weather here...:rolleyes2:
