I'm a little scared.....

Thank you so much, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers.

The swelling is down a little from yesterday, but he's still off his food. A little lethargic (but that would be normal if he had fever from an abscess). I keep that thought in my head constantly.

He's a little trooper though...he keeps trying to play with Indy. Indy seems to know something is up and is gentler than normal (somewhat :rolleyes2:). Although he's really pissed off that I'm hand feeding Bacca Cheez Whiz (mixed with his meds) and yes, he also got wet canned food today as well (he would not eat his kibble, even moistened). Indy still gets same old, same old!

We go see the specialist on Wednesday but I'm going to call my regular vet tomorrow (wouldn't you know it....this is Victoria Day weekend in Canada and everything shut down except for emergency).

I've been in contact with my breeder (and she's been in contact with her peers - thanks Pennylyn!) and there is no history, so I'm going to stay optimistic.

He just looks so pathetic and sad most of the time. It breaks my heart!

Those are good signs with the swelling going down. Power Prayers on their way. Come on Bacca, you have a great mom there, we need you to get
better.

I swear I am not a vet, but that sounds like something is going on with a tooth or his gum. For that area to swell like that in that area seems to me that makes more sense then anything. Thank goodness the vet gave him ant-biotics, that is a good thing. What is even better is the swelling is going down. Something can swell up so quick, and it takes longer for that swelling to go down.
 
hmm... would it also be possible that there's something he's allergic to? I'm not sure if dogs would have the same reaction, but my sister was very much allergic to certain foods, and her face would blow up like a balloon. Perhaps he's allergic to one of the varieties of fish in Orijen...?
 
hmmm hes been on antibiotics what 24 hours now? and the swelling is going down? im going to go with abcess. or some sort of infection in his mouth thats causing it. can you see if he has any sort of stick mark or anything in between his teeth/gums or anything funky going on with his teeth?? Also check the outside of his muzzle do you notice any marks like little bite marks that it could be from a spider? I know down here even though its not warm or tropical (god knows its may 18 and i have the darn heat on) we have some pretty nasty spiders that do damage. I myself have had some pretty nasty spider bites that required medical attention. Just thinking thats its more of an accute problem that came on soo suddenly.....
 
Barb, I just got back from vacation and saw this. Sending prayers out to you, Indy and Bacca that this is nothing more than an allergic reaction to something or some other minor problem that the medication can cure.

I'm sure your little guy will be back to normal in no time.
 
I'm so sorry you have to go through this Barb, especially on a holiday weekend!

Bacca is young and pups are aways getting into things, its likely its not something serious.

Definitely go see your regular vet before having anything else done. He/She may have a different opinion than the emergency vet.

I missed this yesterday, Barb, I'm so sorry for you and Bacca! I do hope he improves quickly. One thought though: have you tested him for Lyme disease? I'm sure there are ticks in Canada, and this is tick season. It manifests in so many different ways and the lethargy you talk about is exactly what mine have had when they've had Lyme. My dogs have also had lameness, fever, swelling or any combination of the above. I'd give a call to your regular vet and ask for a Lyme test....although know that they don't always give a true reading, and even if it's negative, Bacca could still have it. Most vets will treat with doxycyclene as a preventative--not sure what antibiotic they have Bacca on, but Lyme needs a minimum of three weeks. I'd also take his temperature if they didn't do that at the emergency vet....normal for a dog is from 100.5 to 102.5. When Barkley had Lyme he did spike a fever. Lyme will also put them off their food. Just some thoughts...sending LOTS of prayers your way!!

Although they're starting to come out, it's a little early for tick season here in Canada. Its still quite cool here in May (we still get frost), but the ticks have started coming out. My neighbor found one on her leg last week. June is when they typically start becoming an problem here.

With that kind of swelling it sounds like it would definitely be a good idea to rule Lyme Disease out!
