I'm messing up his potty training :(

I found that it helped to quietly say "good potty good potty" quietly as my puppy peed. Then when we were done, I could say it more excitedly and reward with a treat. It helped her learn the meaning of the command.

Do you have a blanket in the crate with him? Hate to say it but it may need to come out.

I still vote having his urine checked. To follow up on that, my girl had several UTIs as a puppy and the ONLY symptom she has was excessive urination.

Yes he has a towel and on top a fleece so if he did pee he wouldn't sit in a wet patch, it would wick down to the towel. Is that a big no no?

I will try saying it soft and quietly. Will he hard ATM with my sore throat, will sound more like a croak!

A thought just occurred to me. He has never liked going outside, we always have to lift him out. Once outside he is always desperate to come back in, trying to push past you to get in. I have to use my body to block the doorway whilst telling him to go potty. Do you think his issues with being outside are greatly affecting his potty performance? After all, why would he want to go potty in an area he feels uncomfortable in? Much nicer inside!

Just a thought....

I think you may have found your answer. If he isn't comfortable outside then that will definitely put a crimp on his toileting habits. Hopefully as the weather improves you will be able to get him out loads so he learns the garden is a great place to be.

I've usually let him out by himself too. Should I start letting Darla out with him to relax him more?

Maybe you can try giving him so outdoor playtime before just scooping him up and bringing him in after he pees or poos. If Darla is a distraction, I wouldn't let her out until after he goes otherwise he'll think it's playtime.

HOWEVER, the flip side of that is him watching her go outside, and you making a fuss over her going outside, may also help him learn. Dogs do a wonderful job of teaching each other.

when I take Jocu out- especially when he was younger- I would carry him out and put him on the grass. by carrying him, there was no opportunity to pause on the way to the door and have an accident.
then I would tell him to "go potty" and as soon as he would start to pee, I would tell him "good potty" "good boy" the whole time until he was done. if he looked like he needed to poo also, I would then tell him to "go hurry" until he started to poo and then "good hurry" "good boy" until he was done. when he looked like he was done, I would carry him back inside.
this is/was without the big dogs.
I have still occasional issues when he doesn't quite finish outside but wants inside and won't do anything other than stand at the door waiting for it to open so he can go inside- then I watch him constantly until he looks like he needs to go out again.

I do find it amusing now in the mornings when all three go out first thing, there is usually synchronous peeing and pooing by all three dogs:lol:

so time, patience, and consistency will help you in the long run to get your pup to do his business outside.

As Silaria said, on the one hand taking him out with Darla may help him get the idea of doing things outside, on the other hand he may get distracted. So I would try it and see. Cadbury was a big help to getting Merlin house-trained because he just copied him. Darla's presence may also give him confidence.

I'm ill at the moment with the flu, so I know I'm grouchy and irritable and probably not on top of everything as I should be, but I'm finding him so hard to cope with. It seems I take my eyes off him for a second and he's gone to the toilet again inside or eaten his poo.

I'm sorry to hear that you have the flu; it's a particularly nasty strain this year. Stay hydrated and get some rest! Hopefully you have someone to lend you an assist with the puppy until you feel a bit better.

I know it doesn't feel like it at the moment but he will improve. Piper was an excellent role model for Logan and training Holly was was even easier because she had Piper and Logan to show her the ropes (they really do train each other).

I would still have a vet check him for a UTI when you get the opportunity.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Kimberly

Thank you :o

I spent 30 mins outside with him today getting him to go potty. He did 2 wees but no poos, and he usually has a poo at that time of the morning. Anyway, I brought him in and left him in an x-pen for 10 mins on his own. When I came back there was a large puddle. I cleaned it up without talking to him or acknowledging him, I didn't want to give him any attention for it.

So, it's either a uti or a form of attention seeking behaviour as I have previously said things like oh dear (yes, VERY silly of me) on finding an accident. I will call the vet today to arrange an appointment and rule out the uti, then we shall take it from there. I will really have to try hard not to say anything to him on seeing an accident as he may think I'm praising him.

I should know all this already having trained Darla, I really don't know why I have been so off the mark this time.

you would think that you'd remember everything but once the dog gets a little older and behaves/responds to commands the way that you are looking for- it's so easy to forget what it took to get there.
Cranberry's puppy days were just 3 years ago and I couldn't believe how much I had forgotten in that time when I tried to apply things to Jocu......
but I was able to refresh my memory about some things- since Cranberry grew up here, there were lots of posts that I could review and go - yes, that's what we did when that happened:winkgrin:

and every dog is different and they respond differently to the same things- so what works/worked with Darla, well- that might not work for Hugo.
Hang in there, he will get it:yes:
