info for people feeding eucanuba

Caution needed when posting about recalls

At the start of the thread, it would appear that all Eukanuba food was involved. Now, it has been narrowed down to certain types. I feed Emma Eukanuba small breed (first puppy, now adult), on the advice of the breeder who feeds it to her puppies. It is NOT one of the foods on the recall list.

On checking, there are only CERTAIN types of Eukanuba recalled (as well as IAMS food), from one manufacturing plant and for a potential risk of salmonella. We need to be careful when posting about recalls and make sure all the facts are there when we do. The recall a few years ago made headlines because of the large number of foods and manufacturing plants involved and involved a contaminated wheat gluten imported from China.

No matter what food we feed our dogs (manufactured, raw, homemade etc) there is always the potential of bacteria or other diseases being present. Human food is also recalled because of risks of E coli, listeria, salmonella, etc. Are we going to stop eating and only eat certain foods because of the recall of prepared meats, etc.? Even the food we grow ourselves can be contaminated without us knowing it.

Yes, P&G does now own Wellness. And Innova too. The field of food is narrowing, sadly.

Where did you see that P&G owns wellness? For the life of me I can't find any information related to that.

The information I see is that Wellness is owned by Wellness LLC which is a combination of Old Mother Hubbard and Eagle Pack Pet Foods. Which is owned by Berwind Corporation (who also owns elmers glue and the national pen company).

I haven't been able to find any information that P&G bought wellness. And on searching the internet I came across an email from Wellness to member on another dog forum.

Perhaps I missed something like P&G buying out a peice of the group that owns wellness? Just trying to find out what's really going on with the food I'm feeding my pup :)

I do know that the canned version of wellness is actually made by another company (diamond pet foods I think). Which would make the entire thing even stranger if P&G bought them out.

The Omnivore's Dilemma

The question to ask is WHY? Why are we having these food recalls? Human and Pet? What is causing us to have E Coli, listeria, salmonella and so forth showing up in our food system?

There are facts and there are opinions. Facts are facts and can only be argued to the truth at this moment in time. Opinions are individual.
When this all started with recalls on food, it made us begin to wonder and several other people as well, so we began to search out the truth. And the truth is, all of our food is in question. I have been in the chicken abattoirs in the south and I have seen them first hand. I have been in a CAFO in Texas and seen beef going to slaughter.

The stench, the filth, the inhumanity: That is the meat industry.

It is disgusting and disturbing.

The egg industry is so precarious that they won't even let a visitor in to view their facilities without full sanitation of the human because the chickens are so fragile, a single germ, will wipe out an entire house, 15,000 birds. The stench from a mile away is overwhelming. The conditions these birds live in is appalling. Humans have to wear respirators to go inside, for the air is so toxic, one can die from breathing it. Do you want to eat eggs from this place?

The industrial food processing corporations are a mess as well. How in the #@!! do you get E coli in SPINACH for god sake? E coli is a meat organism.

Is the USDA going to protect you? The corporations are a big part of the government programs and they are calling a lot of the shots here. Follow the human resource trail of executives for the USDA and you will be seriously concerned.

You have to answer these questions for yourself? You have to educate yourself as to what you are putting in your mouth and your childrens' mouths and your dog's mouth and then live by it. Ignorance is not an excuse anymore.

This is why we grow our own food. We eat only local. It isn't easy and it isn't cheap. We can't afford it anymore than the next person, trust me. But we must vote our convictions with our dollars. We shake the hand of the man that raises our eggs and we know how his chickens are treated and we do know what is in that egg. We trust this man. We KNOW what is in our garden down to the soil it grows in. I sleep very lightly in the summer while the garden is growing. I wake in the middle of the night watching for that evil woodchuck who wants to eat my crop. (I seriously try to redirect him to my compost pile where he can eat till his heart's content) We shoveled the manure and we paid for the seed and the bone meal and for the soil analysis.

There is no hidden cost in our food. We are paying for our eggs and their production. There is no big box worker, working for subsistence wages and poor health insurance, offsetting the cost of our food. There is no illegal worker tapping into the government system elsewhere in our food chain. There are no government subsidies in our food chain, however we do continue to pay the taxes for this to happen so others can buy "cheap" food.

Here is the scary part to us. NO we cannot STOP eating food. Humans and animals must eat to survive. Can a society be controlled through their food chain? Are you comfortable with where your food is coming from? If you are, then when the outbreaks occur you must accept them and not cry out because you have either done the research and accepted it OR chose to blindly accept that the USDA will protect you.

We know this isn't an easy feat to overcome. We know the system is broken and it is very hard for people to "opt out" of the convenience and the cheap food system. It is enormously hard. We are living it. Our puppy is now on a Proctor and Gamble product. GGRRRRrrrrrr Not by our choice but through greed and empire building of corporations. This is now another thing we must fix. We thought we had found an option we could trust. Sometimes we do get discouraged when we thought we were opting into a small company and then it is purchased by P & G and now it is part of the food system we are uncomfortable with because can we now trust P & G not to increase their bottom line by decreasing the quality of ingredients, all at the sake of our dear McKinley?

Look, these are all OUR opinions based on the facts at this time. Opinions. Educate yourself, search out the truth, test the truth against the times of society, draw a conclusion and form your conviction.

We all have to make a food decision and live by it.

Remember that you VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLARS.

Again our apologies for the lecture. We live very close to this conviction. Three meals a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, day in and day out. We think about this conviction. (MMM wants me to remind you all that he gets 2 meals a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and that is one less than Ron and Jan!!!:lol::lol:)

It concerns us that our friends are not informing themselves and are going to be surprised some day when the food chain is controlling their lives or worse yet, the food chain breaks down and we are all starving.

~~~~~again, we respectfully step down off our soapbox~~~~~~~
I was told by the distributor at my pet food store that P&G has bought Wellness, Eagle Pack and OMG (which produces Wellness) -- which would mean they bought Wellness LLC. I can't imagine the distributor would have bad information. If you're concerned, I would suggest a call to the company to ask the question. There should be a toll free phone number on your bag of food.
This is obviously an incredibly complicated issue and draws MANY single minded opinions (no disrespect intended) :biggrin2:!
This being said, I could not agree with you more with your above statement. NO MATTER WHAT we feed our furbabes there is always a risk of something going wrong. I have read multiple posts where the brands I have fed or feed are completely demonized and I am basically killing my pets feeding it to them. I obviously have to ignore such assanine and offensive opinions.
Anyway, ha ha, I say all that to say, we need to "chilax" a little bit and enjoy our pets :biggrin2:.
To state though that an opinion which is personal as asinine or offensive is to be disrespectful of the individual. It is to state that your opinion is right and the other is significantly wrong. Opinions CANNOT be debated on the floor, only facts relevant to the issue and of the time can be brought forth and argued.
We were trying to bring to light some of facts of this enormous issue surrounding this problem of dog food and we were answering a question which had been brought forth. We were respectfully presenting our opinion.
Thank you all for taking the time to read the facts and our opinion.
Moderators, we retire our opinion with this post.
hmmm, lets see- eating meat is grossly overrated, it could have all that bacteria growing there and there is very strong link with colon cancer development for meat eaters.... I came from background where we made our own sausage and smoked ribs, and yea, milk was so fresh that it was still warm in the glass and half of that glass was cream... needless to say what they sell in the stores does not taste like that milk or that meat either...
same as RonandJan I am very careful what I eat, and we do not eat meat and very limited dairy, and we grow our own veggies and freeze them to last us in the winter and buy local and buy in season...
and yes, coming in contact with germs and bacteria are facts of life, so people who work in ER should be sickiest people because of what they come in contact every day but most of us rarely get sick...
everyone does have to make choices how to stay healthy and healthy food choices are at the bottom of it...
just my 2 cents although I do love to lecture:smile2:
It is not just the meat, chicken, egg industry that we need to be careful off. How many of you eat packaged sauces, etc.? To say that you eat only what you grow is fine, but do you drink apple juice? or any other juice?
It is strictly MY opinion that yes there are recalls but there are also other processing problems that never lead to a recall and are never disclosed to the public. Even with our own grown food, what contaminants are in the ground from years ago that you are not aware of? To lump everything in under processed foods are bad, homegrown foods are good in nonsense, in my opinion. Here in Canada, we have very strict processing laws and yes we are not allowed to drink raw milk. I had a friend whose lived on a dairy farm. They would not drink their own milk because of the dangers inherent in raw milk of certain devastating diseases.
The bottom line is that we EACH make our OWN decisions as to what we eat and what we feed our pets. It is fine to put out word of recalls but as I said earlier we need to be very careful that all the facts are presented, which were not in the original post. I feel from this forum that I am a very very very bad person who is doing my dog irreparable harm by NOT feeding raw, that raw is the only way to go. Sorry, but that ain't going to happen. I have become very disillusioned and disheartened by posts that have been made lately in the last couple of months and wonder what happened to the good forums and threads that I found when I found this site.
Kelly and Moderators, I too respectively end my opinions on this thread as it would appear that unless you totally agree with some of the posters, your opinion doesn't matter.
I went to bed and then woke up this afternoon to random drama. :lol:
Eukanuba has bad ingredients anyway. :cool: I had plans to stop feeding it when she turned one. In the end the recall didn't have anything to do with my decision, only that it is making me switch sooner.
I was referring to people who blatantly call Hill's Science Diet and the like, horrible, horrible foods. I just wish people could state their opinions here without being so rude or offensive.
To help others here about Eukanuba and possible concerns and questions about a recall etc, is fantastic!
