I have both a soft crate and a metal one. Lacey sleeps in the metal crate, and I use the soft one in the car and when we are at a meet.

I use soft crates now at the races but as a puppy Sca would have went through a soft crate faster than a hot knife through butter

I would wait to use a soft sided crate until you are sure your pup is reliable with his crate training. Any pee or poop will make a disgusting mess. You will have to crawl into the crate to get it cleaned up. it will also hold the odors.

I like to use a wire crate with an old towel for bedding until the pup can consistently hold it through the night. I use an old towel because it is so easy to throw in the wash. I save the nice fluffy fancy crate pads for when the pup is a little older.
