That's a good thought-- but Lexi had itchy feet last year and we were in a different neighborhood. I think it must be grass/pollen as it happens once a year at the same time.

I had one client whose dog would come in every August like clockwork. In fact the 3rd year I noticed he had come in Aug. 18 for 3 yrs in a row.
As one who has August/Sept allergies myself , Ragweed is the likely culprit. I love the first frost

So glad, Lexi must be feeling some relief!!
I know it's a last resort, but I am so grateful when it gets THIS bad to have something that provides relief, and it's really just very temporary use of it.
I can report that thus far I didn't have to resort to Prednisone this year, even tho T had two days of itchy feet and a little thinning of hair on his hind paws, but the weather has turned cold at night and he's not itchy anymore. I HOPE we don't have to!
That would make it his second year of just skirting it, if we are indeed over it for this season....

Random question...is it important to follow the prescription through to the end? I know with antibiotics it is. But for example the prescriptions says 3 full pills (5mg ea) for 3 days, then half a pill every day for a week. She is already doing so much better. Can I do that for only half that time?

I am NOT a vet, lol, but I have had the same issue couple of years ago, so I did go to the weaning off phase sooner than anticipated. It was fine!
However, the year before it was too early and it didn't improve and got bad again so I went back to regular schedule as prescribed. I noticed changes very fast within couple of days, that seemed to be ok
Again since feeding raw in the last couple of years I found any yeast or fungal worries were gone, so i think that also helps

So gavin is on a short course of steroids and antibiotics right now, too.
He had what looked like 8 bug bites on his hind turn into a Staph Infection.
I tried a week of washing with a special shampoo, using antibiotic/anti-fungal cream, and applying apple cider vinegar to his leg. It kept spreading (albeit slowly).
So off to the vet we went (I wanted to make sure it wasn't mange or something worse). Gavin wasn't itching it, but it hadn't been improving.
My guess is that either he had flea bites or some topical allergy (we had been recently dogsitting at a friends 2 hours away for 3 weeks so he could easily have come into contact with something new).
I didn't like putting him on steroids, and yes, he is drinking and peeing a lot! I am out of work right now, so he can go outside freely most of the day (thank god!). But he has been waking me in the middle of the night to go out since we started (and that is usually reserved for stomache trouble and not just a pee). Its hard to see if it is improving, to be honest. I need to shave his leg again (its his hind leg on the inside up to his belly..very sensitive skin). The fur makes it hard to tell since I am monitoring redness. But whenever I wash it, I mostly end up removing teeny tiny scabs.
I start tapering the steroids today (day 3) so that is good.
Gavin has also been hungrier than normal. He spends an extra 10 minutes licking his food bowl after meal times when before it was just an extra minute or two! Oh, I am using vibrant pets, too.

Well, I'm back for more advice. Lexi has been on the prednisone for 11 days. 7 days in we switched her to a half dose to wean her off because that was the vet's suggestion and she seemed to be doing better. But then on about the 9th day she was biting her feet again. So now we are back on a half dose, and she is still biting.
My husband is going to call the vet today but I am totally out of ideas!

yep, happened to me once, I just went back for a few more days on the 'full dose'

Whatever T s allergic to, seems to be hanging around still for a couple of months before it is gone. I had called the vet and she had recommended to go ahead again until his hair was growing back, etc. So he went back on full for a few more days and then I weaned off again

So Gavin just finished up the antibiotics and his Steroid dose went to one pill every other day. The sores were healing pretty good, the skin lost most of the redness and limited scabs persisted. This morning I took a peak and he has some more redness where it had previously healed up. We have another week or every other day, but if it doesn't improve soon I will go back to once a day and we will need to go back to the vet for some more pills.

Yep--we are back on the steroids. She has been biting on half a pill every day, so guess we better go back to a full one. Hopefully we aren't more than a couple weeks from the first frost and that should help.
If not, we will do a food trial and then allergy testing.
Poor girl. Luckily I haven't seen any sores yet, but her feet are still pink and sore.
