Itchy feet

The trouble with wetting Lexi's feet is that she licks them dry! So then it defeats the purpose. The past couple days seem to be better, though we have also had a little bit of a cold snap, so that could be part of it.

It's also hard to time it because she goes out a lot.

She isn't biting her feet raw (knock on wood) but bless her heart I think it's because she knows I don't want her to. She will start to bite her feet then look at me and stop.

If things continue I will try the Zyrtec. Hopefully we will hit cool weather before we have to do steroids.
 
I thought I would follow up to say that we tried Claritin and Zyrtec as well and they helped for a little (it also got colder) and now that things are warm again (yuck, 80 degrees), she is biting them again. They are now turning pink and nothing seems to help.

So I caved. We are going to start her on prednisone tomorrow. Hope it helps my poor little girlie! She keeps biting at her feet then looking at me all guilty-like because she knows she shouldn't!

well tis the season!
Toffee just started yesterday... I thought for SURE this year we by passed it, but I probably jinxed myself!
 
Hopefully the predisone gives her some relief and it's just temporary. Remember to take her out more often. Predisone makes them drink a lot and will have to pee more.
 
Their are homepet remedies you can try short term if your are convinced they are seasonal allergiesl

But consider food allergies - chicken, wheat or gluten

In the old days, our dog did not suffer from these. But thinking back,, neither did we have kids in school with peanut allergies. And now they come up all the time

I don't have an explanation....but it may be just a current fact to live with for ow.n
 
Toffee is on raw, no grains at all, species appropriate diet. Has been on two years now, I think? It definitely has helped a lot in his skin and overall condition, better immunity! and health. However, in this case and as I suspect in Lexi's as well, because it only manifest itself this time of year I would bet it is more topical than other allergies. I believe a good diet definitely helps to booster that immunity but sometimes cannot be counted on for everything...

I keep T off the grass right now and it seems to be ok again, for now... and I await the next frost, if it gets worse before then I will have to put him on lowest steroids IF I have to, but so far knock on wood it hasn't yet got as bad as Lexi sounds... not yet.. hope I didn't jinx further...

IF it was food allergies it would be all year round. August and Sept are the biggest months for seasonal allergies in dogs.

My JRT mix Jazz had food allergy to beef(diagnosed with a food trial and slow reintro of other foods) if she was still alive she would be 20 years old, I think she was diagnosised in the old days. Food allergies have been around forever in dogs, we are just more aware of them. Plus we keep exposing dogs to more and more novel proteins and carbs so we are seeing a wider variety of food allergies.
 
Does your community spray for pesticides?

If so, you might try boots, or the rubber Pawz or even the topical invisible boot creams to protect the feet. There are several brands available. Dr Maggie's and Pawganics are my favs
