I've joined the Knee Bracers

I had 2 torn ligaments a few years ago from a motorcycle accident and there are several exercises that will help:

1. sit on the floor, place a towel across the ball of your foot and put both ends of the towel in each hand. Pull the towel towards you which in turn will bend your foot towards you. Hold for 10-15 seconds. Repeat several times.

2. lay on your tummy and bend your legs backwards towards your rear and hold 10-15 seconds. Repeat several times

3. place your back up against a wall and SLOWLY slide down the wall bending your knees. Hold several seconds and repeat.

If you do these a couple times a day and several weeks, it should help!!:wink2:

Knee Braces

Oh yes. I recall that vividly. (Sharon, I have no idea how you did it!!!) Thankfully mine isn't as bad as hers, but if I don't heal while running, I'm sure I'll have to eventually sit out. Oh gawd. Someone will have to kill me.

Kill you that is not going to happen.I am still not in the game 100 percent.I am having problems still with my knee.I even had the sinvus(spelling) shots in the knee. They say it is chicken jelly and it helped alot. That needle under the kneecap is huge.My doctor was very good and I felt nothing.

Hey Cheryl welcome to the club, as a 57 year old distance runner I think I have worn about every appliance known to man at one time or another, knee supports, ankle supports, shin splint sleeve PF Sock ,various wraps and kinesi tape jobs full boot, half boot. They do what they are supposed and will prevent further injury while still allowing you to do what you want within reason.

As mentioned rehab with suggested exercises and the brace will be history in no time, I rarely even go to see my sports doc unless it's really like crippiling bad any more I just go to my stash drawer and get appliance I need and give my physio girl a call to get the appropriate exercise regime to follow to recovery.
Till then keep up with the RICE treatments as necessary, rest, ice, compress & elevate, it works wonders.

When Mally was younger I fell a few times and injured my knees. A friend of mine is a nurse and she said after the fall to elevate my knee whenever possible. And to put a pillow under it when sleeping!! (this helped the first night after I fell, it was swollen). Then the next morning I went to the doctor.

Oh yikes!! That's scary. Thankfully, nothing is swollen over here. Seriously, my lack of symptoms concerned my doctor. I hope your knees are back to 100%.

Question to those that have had to deal with this....

I started wearing the knee brace, especially at work when I know I'm going to be walking all day long (tighter, more supportive). I also have been wearing a looser one at home, just to have it on, and when I sleep. My sleeping positions aren't good for my knee and having the brace helps, however, I'm half awake, boo.

My question is...I've noticed since wearing the brace, that my knee hurts more now (when I walk in general and up stairs). And it hurts to bend it more. It didn't hurt like this prior to my doc appt. Not even after playing a round of golf. It's only started to hurt since the knee brace.

Um...do you think it's aggravating it? Do you think I'm just using it less (because of the brace, I'm not bending it as much) so it tends to hurt more? I also noticed just sitting in a chair starts to aggravate it. I have to stretch out my leg of put it up on something.

Ugh!

Thanks for the suggestions on the exercises. I'll do those too. Because I know I need to strengthen my knee too. :)

P.S. I love KT Tape, I live by it. Well, okay, it really helped my shin splints when running (general and agility).

Youch! Hopefully, it won't need surgery. Knee surgery is no joke.

I was doing an obedience match back in the early 90's, and found a critter hole of some sort with my left foot. Down I went. My knee swelled almost to the size of my head. That is when I got the bad news. I have rheumatoid arthritis. Since I was in my early 30's back then, a knee replacement was out of the question (they only last 20 years). So I made do with braces, PT, steroid injections, what have you. About four years ago, I got the synovisc injections (kind of like an oil change for your knee). Wouldn't you know it? I am one of the 10% it doesn't work on. So a year later, I got a total knee replacement on the left knee. The recovery was horrific and I cried every time I went to post-op PT. I had to spend 6 weeks in a hospital bed in my parents' dining room because I couldn't do stairs. Not fun. Last year, I was told the right knee was bone-on-bone, and had the right knee replacement done. For some reason, this one went without a hitch, very little pain, and I was up and walking within a hour of getting out of recovery. I passed PT in record time, and was walking a mile a day within 6 weeks.

So now I'm trying to build myself up to being able to show in obedience again - I had been working on agility when I fell, but that put an end to that.

That sounds like it is so frustrating for you. I have been dealing with injuries to both Achilles tendons in thelast few years - probable tear. It is absolutely no fun to have tendon tears of any kind.

Torn tendons and ligaments can take YEARS to heal, and will always be a little touchy. I sure hope everyone with knee/ankle/hip/etc. problems has a speedy recovery!

Don't forget to wear those knee braces! They make a big difference!

I feel your pain!!!

Well, last night was my first agility class with my knee brace. It's just a simple fabric one with some bendable bars in it. More support than a fabric sleeve, but not so heavy duty as ones with metal bars.

I admit, I was running slow and wasn't sure. I had to FC and that scared me as my doc didn't want me twisting. Guess I'll have to do the jumping FC (more like a dancer would turn, light on their feet - so not me).

I really have to rethink feeding Koji yummy food prior to training. I had a clean but horrible run. Koji was barking at me at every jump, he'd turn into me because he is looking for food. Bleah. Didn't help my knee since the run was step, step, get out of his way, step step step, get out of his way, etc. Ugh! Stupid dog. I swear he's trying to kill me.

The next 2 runs I just went all out like normal.

The funny thing? This morning and last night afterwards....my knee doesn't hurt at all. Today, it actually feels good. That's so strange. Considering it's been hurting.

Oh, and I'm going to get a referral from my doc to go see a PT to get some "correct" exercises for my injury...since everyone I know has suggested exercises of some sort. I just wanna be sure I'm doing the right ones for my type of injury. Gotta call today.
