I just rewatched SG seminar on puppy peaks and something made me think about Juliet. You are describing Juliet getting easily frustrated. SG mentions that she teaches her puppies lots of shaping tricks because it allows them to learn in unrelated to sports environments, learn to offer behaviors and choices, accept the failings and most important "learning to learn"
If it sounds about right maybe playing more shaping games will be answer to frustration part.

Ooohhh... *lightbulb moment* That's a good point. I have been mostly going on a fixed reward ratio. Sometimes I will withhold rewarding but that's when I'm shaping and waiting for another behaviour. I'll try to reward on a variable ratio more!

Caro, they actually grew out of the grumbling? I always laugh when Juliet does it. It's hilarious. But I do hope she learns better self control as she matures! I never thought that this was her going through her teenage phase coz she'd been like this since she was a puppy! Oh dear, I hope it's not yet another prolonged adolescence!!

Diva still grumbles and growls(in excitement) it is a more controlled way now at 2.5yrs but she still does it ,it is so funny.

When I showed her for her 1st 2 legs in Novice , she would jump up and grumble and growl at me. I actuall have to stop petting her because I didn't want the judge to think she was being aggressive.

Thanks SheltieChe! I missed the webinar but I think shaping IS the way to go. It slows her down enough to let her use her brain. She really does need to accept failing and not giving up and trying another behaviour! She seems to slowly be getting the hang of that!
