Jumpers Speed

The yps for excellent b is slightly lower for the 12" (3.25yps) dogs, and slightly higher for 20" (3.75yps).
That said, to date I've only owned 12" dogs, who must run a minimum of 3.25yps, which isn't a problem for mine at all. In jumpers, they can do 5-5.5yps typically (pretty darn good for 12"). I think my Ember (16") should be able to get around 6yps when we get to the point of where all of the finessing has paid off, and she really gets collecting, and turning tight.
I do know of a couple of shelties in this area that just can't make time. They're built like tanks, and are too heavy boned. They average yps of around 2-2.5yps.
For some dogs, a big problem is the weaves. You can waste a lot of time screwing around at the weave poles... hence why dogs AKC yps are typically slower than some other venues where weaves aren't in jumpers. Weaves do add quite a bit of time and change the yps. A moderate dog with slow weave poles can often have trouble Qing in excellent b jumpers. My friends BC is a good example of it. She's a moderately fast dog in jumpers... but when she is asked to do the weaves, she just creeps through them (nothing you can do to fix that with this dog. best training in the world hasn't helped) and burns up an obscene amount of time.

Sheri:

1.9 yps? Okay, that's a bit slow. Wow. But then, do you think he was all over the place? I look at some of my very slow ones and my comments usually are "crazy dog". lol. Just a thought. I can see why Edan could have some issues in Excellent JWW. But I'm sure he'd do fine in STD. Granted, I'm in open though, so not sure what those times are like in Ex. Hmm...

Edan is Edan and I love him fast for slow.

Honestly, I'd love to go back and look at video for some of those runs but I don't have any video. (No one was there to record the runs for me.) Of all the AKC runs I've done, I only have 2 on video; one Std and one JWW. I can't get DH to go to AKC trials with me; and I can't say I blame him because it is a VERY long day of sitting around.

I'll probably take a few tries at ExA because you only need 3 Qs for those titles (vs the 10 you need for the ExB titles). If we aren't making time, I'm not going to keep throwing my money at AKC events and focus more on CPE trials.

When I competed with Smokey, who's now retired, we were lucky if we made course time. He was almost always clean but also almost always over course time. Not only was he a slow dog, but he HATED the weave poles. He would do them but he would slow to a crawl and look down at the ground the whole time. As a matter of fact he'd have his MX except that his last run before we retired him was ONE second over course time :(

Then I got Trax and it's a world of difference. His last Q was 6.11 yps in Jumpers.

I could run Cosmo In specials and jump 12" , but I don't really want to do that to the little guy just yet. I think he will come along this year or next, as he just turned 2 in January.
Ah, okay. I was just wondering. Good to know you can jump him in 12" if you need to.

Ortegha,
do you mean like kinda in this picture... IT was a bad day for Cosmo
but he's better Now

Yep that's it! LOL

If they put the weaves at the beginning of the run he'd have a better chance of Q'ing because he was all excited when he was done the weaves and would run faster. But if the weaves were at the end then he would practically walk the course until he got to the weaves and we'd be terribly over course time. Poor guy just never quite understood the weaves and I got frustrated with him and he never got over it.

Trax is the dog that is whooping our butt in time. lol. I may run 30 seconds, only to see someone ran 20. And I'm like WHOA, that's super duper crazy fast. lol. I guess I should be happy Koji easily makes time, but obviously won't be winning any placements. That's okay, Q's are good regardless.

Oh yeah, those 12" Shelties are zoomers!! Well the ones I see typically are. I'm always impressed with how fast they are. Good thing Koji is built for agility (lean and lanky). Seems like Koji will need to speed up a bit to actually compete for placement. He may the more we do AKC. He has yet to learn how to take corners tighter. There are times when I yell at him, "where ya going?" Okay, I'm really glad our weaves have come along so well. He's not uber fast, but still fast. I see dogs like what you're talking about, and I'm like, poor things, they look like they hate the weaves but love the jumps!

I hear ya. Right now being in JWW Ex and Open STD. I'm there at 7am, run by 9am. Then I'm sitting around until about 2-3pm. Can't wait till we're in Ex for both. Shorter days.

And I agree, if Edan can't make it in AKC, who cares, there's so many other venues he can do. Like CPE. Okay, NADAC after awhile is hard too, afterall, they focus on speed and accuracy. And when you hit Elite, you need distance (which we don't have).

Even though he's fast, I feel the same way. A Q is a Q is a Q... I'm not in competition to have the fastest time or the best run or the best handling methods blah blah blah. I just want to qualify. Now that we're in ExB I want to double qualify and that's about it. Now if I could just afford a few more trials we'd have more chances :biggrin2:
