Jumping on door..pooping inside..HELP!

Yes, I believe is you don't see it right then...can't do much about it.

Let me tell a bit more specifics about the problem. After eating at 6am, dogs go outside again. After brought in, while I check e-mail or get ready for work, Max sneaks off to same spot...and...you know! I'll only tell him, "Potty outside" if I find a mess. Max is not crated and never really was. He never chewed or destroyed things...Yeah! Only recently did he start pooping indoors and jumping on glass door 2 months ago. (He is a little bigger sheltie..full blooded,but weighs 31.4 lbs, eating 2X daily and 2treats...not fat though). When I get home at noon, he goes crazy. I recently decided not to put in out right away, to let him calm down. This helps some with his jumping, but he still does it when he wants in. When I go out with him...at any time now, he starts picking up sticks and begins chewing (nervous habit it appears). Maybe I need to be more patient till he does his business?

sounds like a 2 headed problem the. First he's not getting enough exercise, have you thought of putting him in doggy daycare or taking him to agility classes?

Second, when you come in, his leash should be attached to you or at the very least he should be in the same room as you. Also, if he didn't go poop the first time you go out, come in, and close the door, then (without even taking your hand off the door) open it and go back outside and tell him to 'go potty'. You might want to get up a bit earlier in the day.

Sounds like most of the advice given should do well for your situation. You might give some thought to crate training. It helps to give them a special 'cave' where they are safe when you aren't home and he'll learn more bladder control as most dogs wont poo in their crate.

These do not sound like major issues and if you follow the advice given by everyone so far, you should see fast results :)
 
since you dont crate this might not work for you, but what I did with my dogs is this. Take them outside, yes go out with him. Give him 10 minutes to go if he goes YAY!!! GOOD BOY! if not in the crate he goes for 10-15 minutes then repete taking him out until he goes. Since you dont crate though perhaps you can attach a leash to yourself so he cant sneak off and go.

I would avoid using the command untill he knows it. If he doesn't know what potty means, saying it inside, and then outside and when he's going and when he didn't go just won't mean anything.. Just stay out till he goes.

Only say the command to 'mark' the behavior. It took Deja about 2 months before she understood clearly what potty meant.
 
Oh, I'd love to put him in agility training. When he jumps, his head is as high as my nose...and I'm 5'8".

That sounds like a good idea (not letting go of the door knob). Like I said in previous link, I'm now telling him repeatedly, "Potty outside, Good boy, Potty outside" when he is outside the door and I inside. He just now (happened few times consistently now) back up and went to grass to urinate. The pooping, he does in AM and late afternoon. Only once done in house while I was gone...but I had to be gone for more hours than usual.

Thanks... I've been telling him potty since he was 6 weeks old. He knows...LOL! And again...he urinates outside...NOT indoors at all.
 
Potty Yards: Areas where only their business is done are very affective. While in that certain place in your yard, you must not interact (play) with the pup. When we house train, that area we go out to, put the pup on the ground and say "hurry up do your business" and I put my hands behind my back and sort of look up at the sky while half way watching the pup. If the pup tries to play with you, sticks chewed and play bows, ignore it. He is there to do his business. And we do the trick of also, if we think he really needs to "go" and he doesn't, bring him in and pop him the crate or keep him leashed to you, 15 minutes and back outside, repeat!:wink2:

Sounds like you need to run and get Nature's Miracle ASAP. He is definitely scent associating if he goes to the same spot daily.

Sounds great. Sounds like I wasn't giving my dog the patience he needed, nor the exercise he needed. I bet the problem with the door and pooping will both be fixed by my giving him more time and attention, as well as more timely structure. I want to thank ALL for your help. I feel inspired and I'll be sure to let all know how it goes!

Cadbury, my lab, through October - December last year had several 'lapses' in his housetraining. He was 18 months at the time. Only wee-wee accidents, but always in the same place. Anyway, I did a lot of research and there are LOTS of reasons why a dog can 'forget' its housetraining and often it is almost impossible to work out why it started happening.

I think it began with Cadbury when he was spooked while alone in the house and then my routine changed (I was out every evening rehearsing for a Christmas play) and he was never happy being left alone at night. So I think insecurity played its part.

Fortunately, the issue was resolved quite quickly by going back to basics. I took Cadbury outside every 2 hours (and after play or excitement) on lead just like a puppy. I walked him around UNTIL he began to wee then gave his command (be quick) and then lots of praise and a reward. Within a week his housetraining was restored and within a month I was confident enough to let him roam the house freely again. He now goes up to the door to be let out to toilet and I still reward him when he does this to reinforce it. (Though I no longer go out with him).

So hopefully that gives you some hope.

Also clean thoroughly the area he messed in with biological washing powder, if its a particular object (like a doormat) bin it, because the smell will linger and he will return to it.

But I would go outside with him on a lead and say nothing, ignore him until he goes toilet and only then start to play. Then he will associate going toilet outside with getting to have fun with you.
