Jumping

Just wondering what is the best way to stop our 8 month old Hollie from jumping up at people. She loves everyone and when there go to say hi to her she wants to jump up at them to say hi. If people get down to her level she tends not to jump up, but not all people will do this.

Teach her an off! Sit Stay sequence. If she want to meet people, she must be seated and remain seated. No dog should get attention while jumping on people, only sitting, standing, or lying down calmly.

It takes practice though. Start with a sit stay and then have people approach you without looking at her, shake your hand, speak, walk away. When she can control herself, they can then pet her as long as she stays seated.

It's two of the CGC tasks and works great for greeting strangers.

I second what Cara said. When my dog was a puppy, the rule was "4 on the floor" to be petted. I honestly didn't care if she was sitting or laying down, as long as all 4 paws were on the floor. But to get there, it's easiest to start with putting them with a sit or down. The biggest challenge with this is getting other people to cooperate. I requested friends, family, complete strangers who wanted to pet her, to wait until she was sitting or at least had all 4 paws on the ground before petting her.

It has created a funny little habit for my dog. Now when we're walking or out and about, and she she's someone she wants to greet, she instantly lays down, like hits the ground (while a little wiggly and smiley). If the person wants to come up and pet her, and they usually do because they can tell how excited she is about seeing them, I let them. Sometimes the person doesn't want to so I have to coax her to keep walking with me. For a moment she'll be like.. "wait.. I wanted to say hi". I get compliments on how well behaved she is pretty often when we're out an about. She seems to know how to turn on the charm to get attention.

Cara's suggestions are excellent...and I would add that if Hollie does break her sit/stay have people instantly turn their back on her rather than pay any attention at all. Shelties hate to be ignored. I use the back turn with mine if they are barking at me or jumping on me for something...they quickly learn that barking/jumping at me gets zero but if they sit quietly they can get something good to happen.

Hi CMA. I just wanted to say we had a sable Sheltie named Hollie too!! I never thought I would see it spelled that way again.

I agree with all the recommendations. We also require the 4 on the floor with Shelby. She rarely jumps up on anyone, but sometimes she does get very excited with kids and because she knows she is not allowed to jump up on anyone she will jump but not touch. It is like she is a Mexican jumping bean!

She also does stand on her hind legs to say hello to our trainer. Almost like Shelby is giving her a hug, not really jumping.

Whenever I take her in a store with me she gets so excited at the checkout b/c she knows there will be treats. She try's so hard to keep her butt on the floor it is funny. We were at the hardware store yesterday and the people behind us were laughing at how she would sit then lift her butt just a little and then sit again. But once the treats come out and she has permission she will out her feet on the counter and stretch her little head up to say " hey look at me and give me a treat".
