I am sorry I brought it up ..

I am here to have fun and make friends and talk about shelties and I dont want to start any trouble ..

i love it here and dont want to offend anyone.
 
I know this is a very sensitive subject for many dog-lovers. Everyone on this Forum loves their Shelties dearly - many of us have other much-loved pets, too - and it's unavoidable that we have strong feelings, one way or another, on the whole encyclopedia of ethical issues relating to nonhuman animals (and there are many, many issues).

These questions tap into our very deep-seated feelings about animals and the roles they play in our lives. It's impossible for us not to feel impassioned when thinking about or discussing them.

I'd encourage everyone who is interested in these topics to read, research, and come to their own conclusions. Because the treatment of animals is something that we all have passionate opinions about, it can be difficult to discuss in a forum setting. I do not want anyone here to feel attacked or slighted - so please, bear in mind that this is always a sensitive topic, in any group of animal-lovers.

I'm not offended!! Don't worry!!

About zoo's tho...Alot of them are more for education and do alot of good for the animals. When my boys were kids we went to alot of zoo's. Theres alot of programs for education about the animals...plus they do alot of work with endangered ones...
On the other side..I'm sure alot of the animals would rather be in the natural habitat...and I'm sure not all zoo's are equal...

With PETA...check out everything about them..not just what they say about themselves. For me, they are too radical...I think theres a good idea in there somewhere, but somewhere along the line something happened....

Okay lets give Sheltieguy a break!

I think he is probably thinking of how some zoos function. There are the small zoos who confine a n animal to a small area and they do what all confined animals do they pace back and forth and basically wear a path down from bordom. I'm certain he didn't mean that zoos are the same as puppy mills because they are not but to some animals and their size in consideration it might just be. Think about it. An elephant chained to an area that is no bigger that a average size bedroom. That's abuse also. Now the zoos that function like the L.A. zoo. That's a horse of a different color. these animals are enclosed in as natural environment as they can with barriers to keep them from getting out or in with other animals. Pupp Mills just plan s--k!! They are hateful, abusive people that run them they are out strickly for the money and no care for the breed or animal welfare. Off my soapbox.:uhoh:

I'm not mad. I just feel the same way about puppymills and BYB as you do about dog food. :lol:

I will say though that somebody needs to do something about the San Antonio zoo. Honestly. I've never seen anything like it. That's what I was saying that there are good zoos, and then there are bad zoos.

Honestly. If anybody is in the San Antonio area go to the zoo, and you'll know what I'm talking about. If I remember right that zoo is also being sued because of the condition they were keeping their elephant.
 
Sheltieguy - I certainly respect your opinion of zoos and sympathize.... but...

you are in NE PA.

I would seriously urge you, when the weather turns, to visit the Bronx Zoo. On a Sunday I drive down from RI, spend 5 hours and drive back and it makes a nice day. Little traffic or hassles on a Sunday. You are what - 2 hours away if that?
Check out the Gorilla habitat, the Southeast Asia building, the African Plains. See all that zoos are doing for conservation, research and most importantly education, particularly of young people, about preserving habitats.
. Watch 'enrichment time' for the Siberian tigers, (and gawd they are beautiful watching them play from 10 feet away,) the bird house.
You can see the care and compassion in every word the keepers say.
Zoos are no longer a tiger pacing in a concrete pen.

Seriously, i don't mean this as an argument, but rather a suggestion. Take a Sunday, check out the Bronx Zoo. Its a great experience and probably an eye-opener. - Dr. Mac

I would and will love to take a trip to a zoo.

And yes my last zoo visit hmm,,,, 15 years ago .. I saw the pacing tigers, the monkeys in tiny cages being teased by visitors, the rhinos with bleeding heads trying soo desperately to get out of their hellish pens..huge fish in lil tanks (seemed like there were more fish than water in the tanks) so maybe i just had a bad experience. I shouldnt generalize all zoos... but still I think non endangered wild animals would rather be in the wild. (just my opinion).

I think this may be a good comparison to how i feel .... I love to stay at 4 star hotels when I go to a steelers game .... but after a while no matter how nice the hotel is sooner or later we all just want to go home...
