Kidney Issues

Hi Cheryl
So sorry to hear about Miko,
We are sending our prayers for good results at your next Vet visit.
Can't really offer you much advise, As I have discovered with having 3 shelties with the disease and each having different results from food and meds. with each of them.
Sounds like you have found a diet that suits your guy, and hoping it continues to work as it is.
Must say that we caught the problem at an early stage too, and one lived a little over 2 years and the other lived over 3 years, and currently my oldest boy nearly 13 is still with us, and he was diagnosed over 3 years ago too.
He is doing well, with the kidney issue, but his arthritis is causing him pain.
He too is on meds for kidneys, and 3 different meds for arthritis. He still loves his life.
So just keep thinking a long way down the road when Miko will be around.

and 2 at the bridge.

Thanks. It's been crazy trying to learn about kidney disease. Mostly because it seems like everything I learn has a but or if following it. Which makes it hard to understand what is good, what is bad for them. Sigh. I hope to have as much time as you have/had with your pups after getting diagnosed.

The vet called me, I missed his call, but he said that Miko's values are all "normal". I called back to get the specific numbers I needed. Looks like everything is on the high end of the "range". But at least they're not high like before.

So, I'm assuming this means that the food/supplements are working. Which is a good thing. But I'm unsure where to go from here.

I'm still going to research raw or cooked homemade food though, since I hate the idea of him being on Hill's K/D. We'll see though. I know it'll be a lot of work.

This is good news. Basicly at this point you keep him on the supplements and diet. You can change his diet to a similar one but I would do blood in a month after you did that especial if it is not a specific kidney diet(ie homemade or raw) just to make sure that your calulations and formula are correct. Then it just becomes a monitoring thing.

Ahh...thanks for answering Dr. Shelli. I assumed it meant maintenance, but have been reading so many things.....I'm all confused. lol. Kidney disease is not a fun problem since every dog really is different. I want "same". LOL. Oh well.

For now, he'll stay on his K/D diet and I'll research raw or homemade cooked and then if I change over, I'll be sure to get his bloodwork done again. Thanks!

I'm just grateful his numbers are here. If after I change, how often should I get his bloodwork done? Every few months?

So happy to hear the "Good News" about Miko. Great you received Dr. Shelli's input as well.

Thanks Dr. Shelli.

Thanks everyone. He'll get hugs and scratches all around.

Actually, I love when I scratch behind his ear, he tilts his head so much and pushes into my hand that if I moved my hand fast, he'd fall over. Talk about trusting and well, enjoying the scratching. ;)
