Koji's Instinct Test

OMG!!! I dunno about this herding bit. I know Koji needed a bath, but damn!! The water that ran off of him was black!!! He was soooooooooooo dirty. I mean, it was gross. This is worse then when he does agility in a dirt ring.

I need to find me a grass pasture. LOL. EW!!!

Well herding is just muted prey drive.:smile2: Muted just before the kill part. So it should look like chasing somewhat. What you are looking for or so I was told is some interest in the sheep and willingness to engage them. You can train them from there. If they have no interest in them or refuse to engage you really can't train them.

Rachel took Diva to get tested on sheep last year, it wasn't an official test but after sniffing and trying to eat a little sheep poop , she finally noticed the sheep and I guess went crazy. From what Rachel said at first she just chased them around but then started running for the head back and forth tying to cut them off when she realized it wasn't working chasing them. Rachel said at first it looked a lot like uncontrolled chasing/barking but then it started to change into a more herding like behavior. She was told Diva had a lot of instinct. Of course, no video.

We took Grizz and Jamie the next month. Grizz did pretty well, Jamie did ok but reserved like he does everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsEQT4yMY5Q

I really think it is neat to see Shelties do what they are meant to do.

See, that's what I was afraid of. Would he go for the kill. Or try to considering wow, those sheep can move. Well, Diva I'm sure excels at everything. LOL. I loved Grizz's bouncing around, checking out the girl dog, more bouncing around.

I also realized I should have cut Koji's nails. He tends to "prance" around when his nails are too long. Poor thing. Sorry Koji.

I was curious because you need a pass from two AKC herding judges to get the herding instinct certificate........

Hmmmmmm.................

Um, I guess I'll let you know when I get it? I honestly have no clue. Didn't even know there was a "certificate".

Wow--such a different approach! He looks like an aussie that was on the sheep when we were there. They used the plastic bucket on the aussie. Seems like he is just way more "high" than Bentley & Lexi were.

I felt like Bentley was thinking, and Lexi was playing. Koji means business! Glad he reacted to the stick though, bet that means you could train him if you wanted. Some dogs don't back down even with the stick/shaking.

Oh trust me. The way the trainer was using the bottle on the Aussie before Koji, I thought for sure Koji was going to get that. That dog barely even saw it. But yeah, I'm glad Koji reacted to it and also to the trainer to back off. Hey, I was surprised.

And that's why, after seeing Koji do this, I thought of Bentley and Lexi and thought, wow, Bentley was a gentleman about the whole thing. Lexi looked like she was having too much fun barking. Koji....he seemed out to get them.

He must have been dreaming about sheep that night, he was making all sorts of noises and "running" in his sleep. So cute!

When you see that "drive" in him...makes you think about how much he must not really care about agility. I mean, he loves to run for agility, but I can tell that it frustrates him to not just do what he wants at times. Or that I'm way too slow.

OH! How sweet! Usually after a long day of playing I hear little 'woofs' and groans and see twitching paws! It is so cute!

Koji got his certificate in the mail. Is this what everyone else got? Or is it something else? Hmmm....
