leash training 10 week old puppy

Hi All,

I recently lost my 14 year old sheltie and was completely devastated. Only cure was a new little friend. My question is about leash training. I don't have a problem with her following behind. My problem is that she gets in front, faces me and essentially blocks forward movement. I get that this is herding behavior, but this particular sheep doesn't want to step on her. Any ideas?

Welcome to SN...and please accept my sympathy on the loss of your 14 year old Sheltie recently...they do break our hearts when their time with us is over. A new little lass will definitely keep you busy and will carve out her own place in your heart, even though we can never replace those we have lost.

If your little pup is either food or toy motivated...a treat in your pocket or hand (on the side of you she is on)...or a squeaky toy in your hand will help keep her focus on you and keep her by your side. If she still goes ahead and turns to block...try carrying something like a tennis racket that you can position/hold in front of her face to stop her from passing you...and again work to gain her focus. Once she has had all her puppy shots, a puppy ob class would be a big help too...great for bonding and for focus.

Enjoy your new little one! :smile2:

A welcome from Denmark - sorry to hear you lost your beloved dog feel with you.

Although it's hard with a little new puppy, it has also been the way I've moved on.

I just forgot every time how it was to have a puppy.

Thanks for your responses. I believe I have solved the problem. I bought a halter and have much more control now. Between that and the tiny bits of chicken, she is getting a better sense of what I want from her.
