Lexi's dual personalities

Honestly, I think that's what I worry about! Right now, we are almost never around kids (which you guys are right, is the issue)...but in a few years, we'll have kids. And I don't want Lexi to be miserable or scared in her own home. That would be awful for her.

(Yikes, did I just say something about me having kids? That's scary!)

I think Lexi will be fine if they are your children. Like you said, she is relaxed at home. It will still be home, just a little more busy. Plus, there will be baby's toys to steal.

A few years, you say? Wonder how long DH and I will make it without them! We've been married 5 years as of August.

Neither of my shelties had ANYTHING to do with kids at all then when they were 8 and 4, Jessica arrived unexpectedly on the scene. They'd never even seen a young baby before but I want to reassure you, they were less concerned about the whole business than I was. The only thing was that Revel who is very much my dog, was a bit nose out of joint so on the third night I took him aside and hugged him lots and told him he was my special boy and always would be. People say dogs don't understand english but after this he was fine and back to happy mode. Now they are exceptionally tolerant of her and she is a very exuberant kid.

Now Merlin had a bad experience with kids as a pup and would acatually growl at them but he has known Jess from day one and is fine. He will give a warning low growl occasionally when she oversteps the point where he is comfortable but she has grown up with the shelties and she understands their language and backs off. It goes without saying we don't ever leave them together alone, for the dogs sake more than anything, she is quite exhausting. Now she will throw the ball for them which is great fun all round. Don't worry it'll be fine:smile2:

Thanks, everyone for the thoughts and tips :)

Yes, it will be at least a FEW years (we've only been married 10 months!)...I figure maybe in 5 years? Gosh, it's still a scary thought.

Zak has not been around kids much except his breeder has a young son who is 4 I think and he loved him. She now has a baby so I am anxious to see how Zak is with her. When he hears babies cry on tv he stops and watches.
He was around a nephew of ours that is 13 but he also has some learing dissabilities and Zak was fine for a while but then got tired of playing with him and just left the room.
Maggie is okay with kids does not like them approaching her -depends on the age.
Ashley I think Lexi will be fine with kids of your own. She will make a good babysitter. I am sorry she is giving you some challanges right now, maybe it is the age.

It is funny how the Shelties will react to the kids' age. Emma is really gentle with the little ones- the three little ones she very rarely sees. The girl who is five is Emma's best buddy. She will be rougher with the eight-year-old and the two 11-year-olds.

But, my five-year-old great-nephew who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and ADHD, she is totally different with. She plays hard with him, but also watches how she treats him. She knows that he is not strong physically.

I just remembered...

We went to a family reunion the summer before this one (meaning Duncan wasn't born yet and Abbie was a puppy mill mama at the time, so Pierre was the only baby) and my cousin had a 14 month old baby. He had a little pushy car thing and kept trying to run Pierre over!! Pierre was SUCH a good boy. He just trotted away and came back only to get his ears gently pulled (hehehe... I watched to make sure Pierre wasn't abused, but he kind of liked it). And he got to lick the baby all over the cheeks which made him happy.

This of a dog who had never ever seen a baby or played with a kid before.

Jazz my rescue JRT mix, who spent her first year in a kennel and had never seen the inside of a house, loved kids. All of them, babies, toddlers, grade schoolers etc. She was scared to death of men at first and wanted to kill every dog she saw but somehow she had this love for little ones. So tolerate. I often wondered how that happened. :confused2: She did have a really sweet nature with people and I often wonder what she would have been like if she had been treated right as a pup.

Bentley likes kids, too. He doesn't really like people to approach him, but he seems to understand that kids love dogs, so he obliges them. He would just lay in my niece's lap all weekend. I don't think he loved it (he's not a lovey dovey dog), but he was super tolerant...and I think secretly basked in the attention.

My five-year-old greatniece and greatnephew (not twins, cousins) would both love to take Emma home with them. She just loves them both. She is also very gentle with Dad, knowing he is not well and is elderly. She watches him closely to make sure he is alright, just like a therapy dog would. She was the same with my mom. Now me, she just climbs all over and treats me like I'm another dog! No respect.
