Liam at the emergency vet!

Leptospirosis is generally treated with antibiotics and supportive care. When treated early and aggressively, the chances for recovery are good but there is still a risk of permanent residual kidney or liver damage. Currently available vaccines effectively prevent leptospirosis and protect dogs for at least 12 months.
 
Wow that’s scary Gloria, it’s great that you were so proactive and got him in the emergency vet today rather than waiting till tomorrow!
Will he need follow up at your regular vet with additional blood work to see if there’s any damage?
I’d call an exterminator and see about traps to get rid of those rats!
 
I have killed four already myself!
This is so scary!
They are really smart and I am filling my bait traps with poison that I hate to use! Killed the 4 with regular traps!
It does not help that my pond must attract them too!
 
Late to this - OMG Gloria, is that his diagnosis? Can be very serious! We've had a major rat problem here and it is also carried by opossums and raccoons. It's in their urine. Please keep us updated, sending major prayers for Liam. Thank God you got him in right away even with a parking lot wait!

What is even scarier is I have an eye infection I think has been caught from Liam!
More than ten genetic types of Leptospira cause disease in humans.[12] Both wild and domestic animals can spread the disease, most commonly rodents.[8] The bacteria are spread to humans through animal urine, or water and soil contaminated with animal urine, coming into contact with the eyes, mouth, nose or breaks in the skin.[
 
I've always thought that lepto was contracted from contaminated bodies of water, puddles and dirty streams and such..had no idea they could get it from rodents! I've never gotten the vaccine for mine because years ago there were side effects from it. I think they've improved it now but certainly worth talking to the vet about! Thanks for sharing this information, Gloria, and I'm so glad you got Liam in quickly and he will be OK! Please take care of you now too!
 
We've had an exterminator contract since we got Katy as she arrived from rescue heavily infected with fleas. They cleared out the fleas and treat us quarterly for the critters that always want into the house. It has been worth it.
