liver disease

Danisgoat,
Yes Red Bank is superb, absolutely the best. Last night he was coughing badly so we traveled to Red Bank again, where they drained his belly fluid which is extensive and told us we caught him just in time because he has developed pnemonia.

Thank you for your input. I am from Millville NJ and our vets are like stores here and in the surrounding towns, they close at a certain time and not open for emergencies which is intolerable. We have been seeing Dr. Catalina at Red Bank and she is marvelous.

Kate

I am glad to hear that you are going to Red Bank. They are top notch, and really are the best place in the state for vet care.

I will keep your pup in my thoughts, and please keep us updated on how he is doing.

Oh thank you for sending good thoughts our way. Will keep you posted. Do you suppose that anyone ever beats end stage liver failure? I know that people can get by for years.

I really don't know. My best advice would be to send an e-mail to Dr. W. Jean Dodds. She is amazing with autoimmune diseases in dogs, and I heard that she has great advise for working on dogs with Liver Disease.

Here is her website:

I believe that one of our members Dawns2shelties has spoken to Dr. Dodds before. She is extremely helpful.

Yes I have and she is very generous with her info. I got her number off the website. I think it also tells you when she is available to speak with. She wanted nothing in return as far as payment and was happy to help. You can make donations through the site though if you choose.

I was also going to mention I bought the book Clantyreesheltie has referred a few times Raw and Natural Nutrition for dogs by Lew Olson. I just checked and it has 8 pages on liver disease. There are homemade recipes and supplement info. as well. I purchased it on Amazon. Although it sounds like this is a book based on raw it covers cooked food as well. All the sample recipes in the liver section are cooked meals.

Please continue to keep us updated on Seamus.

Seamus

Dani,

You will never guess, Dr. Dodds took the time to gve me a diet for Seamus. I am so happy to have all this input.
Today Seamus bounded out the door to jump in the snow.
Although his back legs have been compromised by the prednisone he took in the summer his energy was such that although stiff, he was outside giving it his best shot.

Kate so glad he had some energy today. Hope the diet Dr. Dodds recommended helps she is so kind to help us when we are in need of info. Kate what diet did she give you? It may be helpful to Barb as well.

Please ask your vet about denamarin....Abby had elevated liver enzymes and denamarin lowered them. I know its not the same as liver failure but it regenerates cells. Good luck.

Seamus vet vist and gall bladder mucocele

Thank you Abby's Dad.

Dani,
The diet is simple: 2/3 potato mix and 1/3 meat or fish, Sweet potatos, white potatos, chicken, white fish or pork, carrots, spinach, green beans, parsley, italian seasonings, salt and pepper and a little garlic powder.

I don't use the garlic powder though.

I would like everyone to know that gall bladder mucocele affects shetland sheepdogs more than other breed and can be the the culprit in compromising the liver.

See the article called gall bladder obstruction in dogs/petmd.

The vet was surprised that Seamus, today has pink gums, and bright eyes. He also will monitor Seamus for fluid drains. If you drain too much you encourage the fluid to build up faster. Maintenance will be key to his condition over time. Did you hear what I said, "over time." Sweeter words I have never heard.

I am cautiously optimistic.

Best
Kate
