Lucky has become an early riser...

Our 6 1/2-year-old Sheltie has been faithful to the same sleep habit for several years. We go to bed about 11:15 pm after watching the late news. Lucky goes out for one last pee or whatever he needs. Then he is back down in the basement and sleeping until 8:00 am on average. This fits with our schedule very nicely.

Well for whatever reason the last two days he has started "Take me out barking" around 5:30 am or so and my wife slowly makes her way downstairs and brings him out to the deck where he is free to do his business. Problem is he doesn't seem to have any business to do and is just up barking for whatever reason, but no real need as we would have expected.

So back down to the basement he goes and after say a half hour he is barking again, and the pattern repeats itself. She ends up leaving him outside, but he has already ruined our night's sleep.

We are both of and age that we need a good night's sleep...this change is really messing things up and we can see no reason for it.

Help!

Do you have a change in schedule of the garbage truck/construction/daily deliveries?
It could be something is waking him up early in the morning. and being in the basement he would hear but not see it, hence the barking.
and once he is awake, well he wants to come up.

Blueberry did that to me twice last week…jumped on the bed practically on my head waking me up! Turned out she had to go outside the first night, the second night she wanted to cuddle. Fortunately it hasn’t happened since! I’m sorry Lucky has been waking you up…I agree with Cindy, perhaps he’s just hearing something your not? They do have much better hearing than we do. Hopefully you can get a handle on it!

Our boys sleep in their crates, not in our room but in the room below us. I had crate covers made on Etsy. If in the crate during the day, if we leave for an extended time, the front cover is open. At bedtime, the front cover gets dropped.

I started crating with our doxies. With their long backs and propensity to climb on everything to jump off, it was a safety thing for us. It's just become the norm. The boys are quite comfortable in their crates, Deacon often barks to be put in bed (I did better with my dogs than with my kids!). We can take them anywhere and just bring along their crates. Sometimes they sleep with us but the last rental we had we had other folks renting above us. Deacon didn't like the noise and slept in his kennel instead.

I would bring to the vet to alleviate concerns for a bladder infection, he may be hearing noises that you don't.
