We live in a gated community that likes things the way they want. They don't care what the home owners association wants.i have a feeling that they are going to try and make us find Luke a new home because of his barking.. if it should come to that please let's show them Sheltie Nation Strong. Please! And please those in the hurricane path be very careful and stay safe.in the aftermath please let me know if there's anything you need!

You might try and teach him the "QUIET" command. Shelties are very smart and all the shelties I have ever owned have learned this command and will always stop barking when I ask them to QUIET. There are two Chihuahua's that live next door that barks more than all three of my boys! They won't stop barking at all and the owners have to bring them in the house to get them to stop. Stay safe

I know what you mean and we try but he gets so excited out comes bark bark bark
And there two Chihuahua across the street that bark constantly one of them bit a person on the heal and dtew blood. I will have to train hubby first I guess because I think it's the inconsistent that' is the problem

Gosh I don't want to do that to him. He has so much spirit
Bark softening is one of the most misunderstood procedures on the face of the earth. It does not, as the animal rights loonies would have you believe, remove the dog's voice or spirit. It's a simple, five-minute laser procedure that reduces the volume of the bark. I have six Shelties and neighbors; mine are bark softened and they all still bark as much as their little hearts desire, but it's not as loud and ear-splitting as it would be otherwise. Here is an article I wrote explaining the procedure several years ago.

The problem these days is that veterinarians who are qualified to do this procedure are few and far between and it's hard to find them. Usually a Sheltie or Collie breeder will be able to refer you.

Bark softening is the only way my talkative little Sheltie is able to live in our NYC apartment. She still barks as much as she wants, and she can still express her feelings (she has a whole repertoire of barks, from happy-playful to DEFCON 1), but the noise she makes is quieter and the neighbors have never complained. She has an awesome life and spirit to spare.
