Mackenzie is having seizures......

Hello :)
Does anyone have experience with PB for control of seizures?
Mackenzie is just 5 and they believe she has encephalitis.... Treating with steroids and dioxycycline but developed seizures as well.
We are heartbroken that she has to go through this and has lost her sight as well.... Any help would be greatly appreciated:
Tearfully,
Mackenzie's mommy

Not with my dogs, but we have a Maine Coon cat who has seizures and is on phenobarbital as well as gabapentin and they work really well. They do have to have regular blood checks to make sure their dosage is right.

Sorry about your furbaby :(

If you do a search here for "seizures," we have several members whose dogs are on phenobarb for seizures. Their experience may help you. I'm so sorry to hear that your pup is going through this. I hope the meds help.

Thanks to all for the advice and plates to follow up on.... Will be sure to do so and keep current with her progress :)
Today was a good day- no seizures :

My Aussie has seizures. He's been on Phenobarbital, Zonisamide and Gabapentin. We recently discovered his bile acid levels are elevated and are trying to get him off pheno by switching to potassium bromide. Good luck!

Hugs and prayers for you and Mackenzie. It is so difficult when your sheltie is sick and you just have to wait for test results.

Good luck,

Keep us posted,

Kate

MacKenzie"s update

Thanks to all for the prayers and best wishes for our girl :) She has since seen a neurologist, whom, without testing (as MRI"s are astronomical) thinks she has GME. They have done no other testing other than blood so far, so I'm not sure how much of this diagnosis to go with. She has had such a difficult month that we didn't want to put her through a spinal. Her seizures have dropped in number and she is only taking the pheno currently for these - however, they have since loaded her up on prednisone and she is finishing her dioxycyline.
As all of us do, I began to voraciously read everything I could and found some interesting info on holistic supplements for the immune system that we are going to try. If anyone has used Gluta DMG please let me know how it went. MacKenzie is a trooper and has taken losing her sight with all the grace a little lady would- it still makes me cry everytime I talk about it and the thought of losing her is numbing. Should anyone have any ideas/experiences with and of this and want to weigh in your ideas... we are more than happy to listen :)
We have since changed her food to grain free also with hope that this will better her quality of life as well. It is interesting that all of this began after she received her yearly vaccinations at the beginning of this month. Anyone ever have allergic reactions to vaccines?? Just thinking out loud and looking for any possible way to help her or make her days better :)

She is going about 3-4 days without any episodes - that is now what the neurologist has called them as she believes they are due to "vertigo".
Looking forward to hearing from other members :) I also am in need of info about how to make getting around the house easier for her as she is pretty much blind now - someone knew of an owner with a blind dog as well but I can"t find her name????
Thanks so much,
MacKenzie's Mommy:fl

mbfrench- her dog, Mia, was born blind and deaf.
they also had a blind cat so she might have some insight for you.

We had a rescue whom we adopted knowing he had Epilepsy. Unfortunately he was only with us for 15 months before he passed. Based on what we know, we believe his previous owner gave him alcohol and severely damaged his liver.
He was fairly well controlled on PB till the last 4 months or so.

Anyway, I did a lot of research over the year Toby was with us. There is a site called Epi Guardian Angels http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/. There is a huge wealth of information on epilepsy. While your baby is on PB, make sure to have his liver values checked quarterly as it can affect the liver.

We did DMG in Toby's food. Im not sure if it made a difference but it also helps protect the liver, so I don't think it hurts. We used the Vetri-Science drops. They are cheapest on Amazon and available through their subscribe and save program.

One of the most important things you can do is start giving milk thistle. Again, vetri science has a liver support treat that has milk thistle in addition to some other great ingredients.

We also used EaseSure by Pet Alive. It's a homeopathic formula that is supposed to help ease the nervous system. Some people have reported success in just using that to stop the seizures. Again, I'm not sure how much it helped, but there are a lot of success stories with it's use floating around.

If your baby has any anxiety, I really like the bach's pet rescue remedy. We used to use it after Toby's seizure to help him recover. He also would get very focused and almost angry (usually the day of when he'd have a seizure). We would give him some drops to calm him down and that seemed to help.

Also, I stumbled upon this on the epi guardians site, but if you put an iceback on your baby's back (if you imagine a horse, where the saddle would go), you can end the seizure sooner. Toby's seizures were over 2 minutes when we first brought him home. We got them down to a matter of seconds. Sometimes if you can catch it early enough, I think the ice actually prevented his seizures a few times.

As far as blindness, just try not to move furniture around or make big changes. When I was a child, my parents Pekinese was blind and my grandparent's poodle went blind as a senior. Both dogs did really well with it. If you have a 2 story home, just make sure to gate of stairways to prevent falls. Otherwise, dogs are remarkably smart and will do just fine.

Your little girl is in my prayers! It sounds like she has a great mom! I hope some of my ideas are helpful to you.
