Magic meatballs

So you actually hold the treat in your mouth and get your dogs to take it from you that way?:eek2:

I either take it out of my mouth and give it to them or spit it down to them and they catch it(usually when teaching formal fronts for obedience).:smile2: I just hide the treat in my mouth. It like magic. Is food there or isn't? Who knows? Kept them guessing.

I buy the Jeno's Turkey hotdogs in the 24 hot dog pack. I take each hot dog and quarter it lengthways so that I have 4 strips of hot dog and then cut these into 1/4 inch segments. You end up with a pie shaped piece of dog.

Place these on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for one hour. I used to microwave but it would take forever, you could only fit about 2 cut up hotdogs on a plate and they had to be nuked for 10 min.. by doing the oven and cookie sheets, I can fit all the hotdogs on two sheets and both sheets in the oven at one time.

The finished product should be a slightly cooked hotdog wedge smaller than your thumbnail.

Place these in a baggie in the fridge and pull out a handful when you want to train. The dogs love them, they aren't messy or expensive.

we are currently training Deja and Darby to play flyball as well as working on their attention training. We do practices for each at least once a day, sometimes more. The hotdogs last 1.5~2 weeks. They cost maybe 5 bucks and the dogs love them.

P.S. The treats don't have to be big. You aren't feeding them. You are rewarding their senses. Give them a taste and a smell that they enjoy!! You want smaller treats because when you are doing lots of repetitions you want them to be able to get their reward and process it quickly so they are ready for more training. If you give them a big chunk of food or a treat that they have to chew up, they will spend more time eating than training. Most comercial dog treats are too big in my opinion. I end up trying to break them up or cut them up if I am forced to use them. It's messy.

We have never had a problem with Deja begging. Darby does beg at times but I have a feeling that someone slipped him table scraps..
