martingale collar and efforts to prevent Sandstorm from barking/lunging at cars

You are right...it's still shut down. I thought about emailing her and finding out what is going on, but I suspect, there is some personal issue, so I did not want to pry. I was thinking about getting matching leashes for the pups this year, as belated birthday presents....they still think they are going to get one of those enormous bones, though!
 
I agree that "ignoring bad behavior" and rewarding the good behavior does not work for every dog. It definitely did not and does not work with Ellie. She needs more specific guidelines--as in "there are consequences for bad behavior." It was a very frustrating time because with the other two Shelties I had in my life, the training was a total breeze. The first one because she would do anything to please me and was very sensitive to a growl or loud voice from me and the second dog because he was a laid-back (not timid) "follower." He needed direction in his life. Ellie, is a independant, willfull, too smart for her britches, drama queen.

Every dog is different and you have to find what works and then be consistent.

I am a total fan of the Martingale collar. It has saved Ellie more than once.

The martingale collar is excellent, thankyou people for recommending it. This a.m. Sandstorm and I went out walking- the collar really does make him pull back, and he cannot get out of it. I don't treat him anymore, I just call him to me when I see a car, to distract. A few times he lunged because of trucks and louder cars, but also he sat and watched some go by. A work in progress,
