Massachusetts Bans Debarking

With everything going on in our country WHY are they wasting time/energy/money on THIS issue!

I've met quite a few "de-barked" dogs...they weren't silenced by any means and seemed happy and healthy to me. I haven't ever had a dog de-barked but its not like I wouldn't consider the surgery if I had a dog that was a determined barker and it was ruining the community spirit towards my dog.

You cannot compare that to a cow being humanely killed and then its hide being removed.

Abbatoirs in the UK are heavily monitored by animal welfare, they are heavily governed by laws far more restrictive than in any other country. My brother has visited one such place and can say the animals are treated well.

This topic could get heavily political and way off topic really quick. The United States has terrible issues with the CAFO's, and the corporate organic farms are no better. There is nothing humane about how these animals are being treated and killed all for a McDonald's hamburger and corporate greed.

I just get so frustrated with our government that they would take the time out of their schedules to dictate something that is such a non issue compared to the HUGE issue staring them in the face: e-coli, salmonella and too many others to name.

I would be very surprised if the various clubs -- breeders, performance, etc., in Massachusetts don't band together and initiate legal action against this legislation. There are avenues they can pursue, and I certainly hope they take them. This is a very dangerous precedent to set on many levels, not just for dog owners.

Two of our three dogs are bark softened. Checkers came to us that way -- she has the most delightful voice! She sings, and talks, and vocalizes constantly. We liked her voice so much that we had Barkley done. He barks just as much (and nearly as loudly) as always, just not at that ear-splitting decibel that used to drive everyone crazy.

Unfortunately, public perception about "debarking" ranks up there with dog fighting. It's up to all of us...dog lovers, breeders, show people and performance people, to change that. Talking among ourselves is not enough. We need to get the word out, any way we can. Otherwise we will have more horrible instances like poor Caro's on our hands.

My Club which is in MA did try to educate and not allow this bill to come to this however we are small and do not have unlimited funds like the AR that backed this bill via a 15 year old kid who started it. I can say at every hearing for this bill we had atleast one club member there if not more, in the end it didnt matter as most reps blew off those that were opposed to the bill. Just by the sheer number of our club I think there are 50 or so and only I think 20 active members verses the masses it was an uphill battle that we lost...It didnt help either that I think it was the Mass Poodle club(dont quote me on this one Im 95%sure thats who it was) that pretty much bashed all those who have de-barked dogs and lobbied for this bill as well...:no:

So I'm assuming they are banning the actual surgery, not debarked dogs.. Seems to me that if you wanted to debark your dog, you would just cross the state line and have it done..

no thats not the case if your found to have de-barked dogs and the surgery was done after the bill was signed your fined, have to do community service, counseling because afterall your being cruel to animals, and there was talk or removing your animals for endangering them...:rolleyes2:

Cool, so now debarking will be like having your windows tinted illegally dark. They will do it for you, but won't give you a receipt. Just like having tails and ears fixed. I don't see how they can prove when the dog was debarked.

By the pups age. Next year if you have a 1 year old de-barked and the bill is 15 months old, then it was performed after the bill.

We have meth labs set up in homes with babies present and a nationwide out break of e-coli in our spinach but it is more important to chase down a dog in a loving home with a softer bark!

Ann, Linda......you criminal you!:lol::lol:

I'm telling you, I would be getting my club and every other interested club together and hiring a lawyer and tying them up on appeals in court for so long their hair would turn green. Linda, I know you said your club sent people to the hearings, but nothing works like five levels of appellate court appeals....really. :mad:

I have to wonder just how much effort is really going to go into enforcing this law.

In most areas, law enforcement is woefully underfunded. I can't believe that they will make dog debarking violations a priority. Unless Massachusetts has no murders, rapes, armed robbery, gang problems, drug issues, meth labs, child abuse, domestic violence, burglaries ....
